Skirmishing with Rapid Fire?

I seem to recall reading about a gamer using Rapid Fire rules for skirmish games. I'm wondering how you'd kind of sort it? F'rinstance, the core rules don't differentiate between a rifle and Tommy Gun.
If anyone's had a go at a Rapid Fire skirmish, I'd be most interested to hear about the house rules used.

Rapid Fire started life as a skirmish set, and the v1 rules had stuff for throwing grenades and the like. You could adjust firing points and ranges easily enough to give more detail

I scale it up and down for skirmish, from squad to company, no real changes.

Visually, it looks like a skirmish game, so you are halfway there.

If I ever got round to it I would be using my platoons on a 1 to 1 basis.   The main issue which I cant resolve is not that there's no difference between rifle and smg but that there's no difference between rifle and LMG.
