Imaginary units
« on: October 13, 2009, 11:48:28 AM »
Thanks to Majorsmith, I will shortly (postal vaguaries permitting) be taking delivery of my very first unit of Victorian British troops, some beautifully painted Ironclad Line Infantry (in those weird 'policeman' helmets).

Can anyone suggest a good name for them (their regiment I suppose), as I don't want to go with a real unit? I've seen a few unit names that people are using like the Eastern Association Rifles and the Great Western Rifles, and I suggested the Punjab Artillery Reconnaissance Patrol for Jimbibbly, all of which I like (if I ever get some Indian Army artillery, I'm so stealing PARP back!).

So far, their background is that they've been sent to the newly-discovered continent of Atlantis (or 'New Cornwall' as Her Majesty's Government is insisting on calling it, regarding it as merely the largest of the Scilly Isles); this particular company is under the command of Captain Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett, who is possibly the most incompetent officer in the British army; and there is a possibility that they were raised in response to a sneak Japanese attack on Poole Harbour (I like the joke, haven't quite managed to work in the background yet).

Their operations will likely be consisting of dinosaur hunting, rescuing aristocratic British ladies in peril, fighting the beastly French and dastardly Prussians (probably), patronising and talking loudly and slowly to the native Atlanteans, casual extermination of 'inferior races' like Morlocks and Dwarves, mocking Americans, and generally getting into trouble (because Melchett is a total idiot, sadly).

Or even, if anyone else wants to post up what units they've created for VSF, that might might jiggle my imagination-valves a bit.

Thanks for your time and potential ideas!

How about the 'Atlantean Recon Service Expidition'  ;D  ;)

You can have the 'PARP' back whenever you want, I might stick with 'FART' or try something else.

cheers

Given their background, how about the South Western England (Atlantean) Territorials? Known to all and sundry as "Melchett's Sweaty Pals Battalion"?

Great idea for a campaign, by the way. Really interested to see where this takes you.  :)

 lol

Thank you for all your suggestions ladies and gentlemen. I especially like "ARSE" and "PaStI"... they very much made me laugh. "Melchie's Sweaty Pals" sounds... horrible, but the sort of name that would stick. "RAREB(ItS)" took a little work, but I got there in the end...

But even thouse that weren't tea-blurtingly funny were very good ideas. The thing about names like the Great Western Rifles is that though they're not real, they sound like they could be, and that's a good thing too (given the amount of daftness already in the campaign background). The Duke of Fenwick's Own Fusilliers is growing on me... especially as I'm planning to add some Cawdor Highlanders (my version of Gordon Highlanders) to my force at some point, it might be nice to have a bunch of units all named for noblemen.

I'm pretty sure 'Highlanders' should be in kilts (oh no, I now have "Carry on up the Khyber" in my head),  and maybe wearing Glengarrys. Do Fusilliers have special hats or something? Should I be asking this over in Colonial?

Thanks again for any and all suggestions, plausible or... less so. Keep them coming, cheers!

There is a small industry in inventing fictional British regiments:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_British_regiments

My favourites would be the Loamshires, used by the British Army as its own fictional regiment.  The Borsetshires are another illustrious unit, located between Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire and on BBC Radio 4.
