Celtic Roundhouses scratchbuilt
« on: August 24, 2022, 11:12:40 PM »
Some time ago I made just for laughs and kicks, 2 Celtic Roundhouses, using simple material I had around. Each one was done with slightly different technique.

Roundhouse 1

Its constructed from interwoven toothpicks and hemp string. The stonework initially was made with foamboard but it had a little hair dryer accident  ;D and was redone with Milliput. Imo Milliput is the best material for this kind of work if you dont mind the cost. I had some old one going bad so it was a win win. The ground is a mix of sand+talcum powder+acrylic color. Vegetation and twigs are made from seasoning herbs, oregano, mint and hemp string soaked in Sap Green FW ink. The roof was made from card and unwind hemp string. It was all painted with cheap tube acrylics, except from the red entrance drape, which was painted with Kimera Kolors. I just used a tiny little bit of red and I got the most intense color red I have ever seen in miniature paints. Initially I didnt want it so saturated but I ended up liking it. I also used some pigments to dust everything abit. The earth colors are literally dirt cheap here in Greece due to the use in religious icons, you can get a jam size vase for like 3 euros.

Roundhouse 2

This one was made mainly from card and foamboard including the stone work. I used afew leftover bits of balsa and chopsticks for the entrance and doors. The roof was made in the same way with the first.

And a picture of our little neighborhood and the guy that runs things around

Those look great and better than the resin pieces one can get. I would imagine a damn sight cheaper and not that much effort to make.

On the average they are about 2-3 euros of material each. Now considering that everyone has some string, cardboard and some offcuts of foamcore, they are practically free  ;D
