Don’t Look Back! [Black Site Studios]
« on: January 08, 2023, 10:17:41 AM »
It’s not Gothic Horror, to be sure. But this seemed like the best subforum for a thread about recreating a hazily-recalled, generic ‘80s Slasher picture on the table top.

Don’t Look Back! is a cooperative game using VERY FEW (generally, only 5!) figures: four hapless victims and the Killer. The Killer can be any of several archetypal horror film antagonists but aspects can be randomized to keep things interesting. The victims are just regular people, most of them teenagers as you might expect. The usual course of a game sees tension building until the Killer appears — then things get violent very quickly. I find the gameplay quite nicely emulates the movie subgenre in question. In any case, here are some pictures of my latest game and an interesting image one of my friends made.

I have it, it's fun.  I do find the Black Site Studios miniatures a little overpriced so have supplemented with some from other manufacturers.   It's also a shame that expansions contain everything you need to run but at a price.  I wish there was a rules and stat cards only .pdf option.

They certainly aren’t cheap but I don’t mind the prices too much considering (1) so few minis are necessary to play, (2) they have a pretty unique style, and most importantly (3) they are a two-man company making stuff for the love of the hobby.
That's a glorious table setup!
Thank you for the kind words. Here are some more pics of the same terrain, more or less, set up for our first session:

I wasn't aware that they were so small.

As others have said: that tabletop is awesome and perfectly captures the feeling of slaher movies.
Is there a rule, that the good guys ALWAYS divide themselves…especially in dark places?

Board looks awesome! I've seen some of the videos posted by BSS and I think it's more than 2 people ... but probably less than 10! Where did you get those roads from? Are they neoprene?

Thank you so much for the kind words, gentlemen.

It’s less of a rule than a custom. In this case, the scenario was that our heroes started in one corner and needed to investigate points of interest in the other three corners. So they immediately split up, with one of the two-man teams then further splitting up. In DLB!, the Killer is made up of several modular “parts” including their M.O., which controls how they target their victims. In this case, the guys who split up ensured they would NOT be attacked because the Killer’s M.O. was to appear close to the greatest number of player characters. Genre subversion!

Hope to play it soon
Very much looking forward to seeing any resulting pictures.

I think it's more than 2 people ... but probably less than 10! Where did you get those roads from? Are they neoprene?
DLB! is 0-4 players, I believe. The Roads are by a company called Stratagem and they sell them through Amazon. FYI there is also rivers pack. They are indeed neoprene.

Thanks for the answer. Sounds interesting!
So the killer „teleports“ over the tabletop?

Thanks Chairface!

DivisMal — yes, you could say that. The Killer pops up in a cinematic way while the player characters “walk around” as per usual in miniatures games. When the Killer does show up, you roll for movement on a d10 and add a number of inches equal to the number of Fright tokens on the targeted victim. So sometimes (seemingly rarely) the Killer won’t actually get close enough to attack the victim, making for exciting close calls.
