I have enlisted in the AHPC for my third consecutive year. To a certain degree this years challenge will be a continuation of last years challenge in terms of focus: GW's LoTR, Dark Ages and ECW. A couple of new interests will probably show up in the form of 15 mm Sassanids and a friend's Black Templars.

My first entry this winter is some of GW's Variags of Khand:

These are from the 10 figure box set which includes a hero armed with both a bow and a two handed axe:

I admit, GW's take on the Variags of Khand is not how I imagined them when I read the trilogy as a kid but I quite like the mish-mash of far eastern medieval inspiration. The set also includes 3 archers:

The sculpting is a little meh in some areas. I really like how the fabric is sculpted and the poses; the facial features are very fine but some aspects of the detail are a little cobby. On the same sculpt you can have one hand that is beautifully done and the other sort of an after thought.  The bulk of the set are 6 axe wielding warriors:

Cool! And your experience fits my own when doing LotR Southrons. Nice models but the sculpting quality can suddenly drop in the same set.

Before the AHPC I painted a Black Templar character for a friend and- in terms of quality sculpting-  it is like the two ranges are from different companies. ::)

My second entry in this years AHPC features some 15mm Sassanids:

All from Old Glory, the figures are a mix of two different ranges I think (or at least, two different sculptors).

The elephants were more fun to paint than I expected. I should have spent more time on them as I think I could have added more depth to the skin:

They join my slooowly expanding army; I just have a few more bases of cavalry I could add and I will definitely add some skirmishers.

My third entry for the AHPC is a mish-mash of mounted troops:

A couple of bases of Sassanid Horse Archers:

No idea who made them; I bought them second hand.

In 2021 I bought into Bob Murch's 1066 Kickstarter and finally got around to getting some paint on a couple of the minis; a couple of mounted Saxon Thegns.

I also added a Khandish Chieftan mounted in a chariot to my small force of Variags of Khand.

Wonderful hands and faces:

This guy has a Book of Kells inspired hairdo  lol:

I did have to fix two of the knocked arrows:

My 5th entry this year is more of GW's Variags of Khand; this time horsemen:

Much like the other Khand models, not GW's tidiest work from a sculpting and casting point of view.

With only two options- one with bow, one with axe- there is next to no variety.

It makes them a bit of a challenge to paint, quite time consuming, but I am still happy with the end result.

Nice work.  Painting challenges can be a good motivator for getting more figures painted and on the table.
Painted:  2025:539; 2024: 410; 2023: 37; 2022: 56

Thank you Syrinx0. In fact, I am painting those GB Scots I bought from you now. If all goes well, there will be pix of them in this thread by this time next week. :D
