17pdr 8th Army Crew
« on: January 09, 2023, 09:27:00 PM »
My understanding is the 17pdr was introduced in Tunisia so does anyone do crew in 8th Army/desert attire in 28mm?

Doesn't help you but the 17 pdrs in Tunisia would be the 'Pheasants' - 17pdr barrel on the 25pdr carriage.

Edit: Perrys do a Pheasant but not a crew for it. Some of their 25pdr crew would work though....

As Dags says, some of the Perry 25pdr crew would be useful, but only the seated gunner, commander with binoculars and bloke operating the breech.  The other three figures in the pack have the two parts of the 25pdr ammunition and the rammer, which wouldn't be suitable for a 17pdr, which had single-piece ammunition. :(

Wasn’t the Pheasant sent out as new 1st Army batteries, rather than reequipping old 8th Army batteries? Which would imply they would be in long trousers rather than shorts?

Yes, they were 1st Army.  Both armies were issued with BD and KD uniforms, with BD being worn by both during the winter months, which is when the Tunisia Campaign was largely fought.  So yes, BD would be more appropriate, but mainly due to the weather/season than the army they belonged to.

Well raise my rent. I love learning new stuff on here - I didn't know the 17pdr came in time for North Africa, I didn't know about the Pheasant, or obviously that the 8th Army didn't get them.

Thanks! I never thought of 1st Army only wearing BD because it was winter….
