Andekmcc's Junowicz AC - photos updated 09_11_09
« on: 25 October 2009, 12:54:16 PM »
I'm coming in here a bit late mainly because I didn't read the initial invite correctly so assumed that it was just finished models that should be shown I've been working on my Junowicz for a couple of weeks now and making sure but steady progress.  Those of you on the scarab miniatures forum will have seen my 1st iteration of this vehicle this one is the second hopefully with some improvements.  Not sure if a second scratchbuild based on something I have already built is within the spirit of the rules but I assure you I was always going to build a second one anyway :)

I've been a bit sporadic with picture taking of the model but will try and take some more as the model progresses.

I've been amazed at the quality of workmanship I've seen so far in this competition and must ask what tools people are using to get such crisp straight cuts and smooth curves.  I'm cutting using a stanley knife and a steel rule but the blade moves about and so does the ruler so the straight cuts are never as smooth as I would like, I fancy this chopper II tool from Barrule as think it might help but its quite pricey.  Any hints and techniques would be welcome.

Nice start!

What software did you use for the sketches?

Looking good so far Andy.   :D  :D
As for cutting the plastic sheet, try scoring the plastic a couple of times then snapping it off, you usually get a cleen line.

Keith.

For "cutting" polystyrene sheet plastic I always use a Tamiya plastic scriber:

There are other brands, and you could even use the back of a snipped off blade...

Just scribe along a metal ruler one or two times, then snap off one part from the other.

some more photos, nearly all riveted now.  If was doing it again, I would use the next size down in rod (but this was the smallest available at the time) and probably increase the spacing a bit, some rivets still need to be trimmed and filed down to a regular size.

The machine gun holes on one side need to be put in and then its on to the wheels and the hinged armour plate for the radiator and driver.

I just got through the door one of those tamiya scribbers that were recommended to me here (you can see it in the photos  ;)),  a bit late in the day for this model as theres not too much left to cut but I will try it out on the few pieces left to cut.  Thanks again for tip  :)

just a quick photo update, most of the rivets on now, just the rear to be done now, also added some hinges to the door and wheel boxes.  Also taken a couple of shots of some the the additional details: 2 completely scratchbuilt wheels, 3 HMG barrels (still to be trimmed to the right size, hinged armoured plates for the radiator and drivers position and lastly the crank handle and axlefor the front wheels.

That's sort of a strange looking nose.  Is it really intended to be off-center like that?

the engine is in the centre but the hull is asymmetrical at the front (flat on one side and chamfered on the other), the only reason I can think of for this is that the driver position requires the hull to be full width at the front whereas the front gunners position (which is higher up) does not

Interesting.  I guess if the driver is sitting and the gunner is standing...   Gotta be a tight fit in there.

thanks for the kind words Doc.

I'm now looking for some advice, the wheels you see in the latest picture aren't ideal one is now in bits after a failed attempt and making a mould of it to cast the 2nd one  :-[ . I was just wondering if anyone could share with me how they go about making a spoked wheel? and manage to create a perfect circle - I've ordered a set of punches but they havent arrived as yet :-[ , these might give me a better starting point.

many thanks in advance for any advice offered

why don't You try Lego spoked wheels?

If You want to scratch-build them, I would try thick forex - it is easy to work on

make a roughly round disk, punch a hole in the center, fix it into a powerdrill

You will be able to get it as round as is possible with a rough file and sandpaper
the interior would not need to be that perfect, but You can punch it out with a curved chisel
