Nagakute - information/resources?
« on: February 10, 2023, 05:31:21 PM »
Does anyone know of any online resources (maps, OBs, descriptions) for the 1584 Battle of Nagakute? I have Stephen Turnbull's 1977 "The Samurai – A Military History" which contains a simple diagram and high-level description. Domo arigato in advance!

Nagakute is one of the scenarios in the board game ‘Ran’ from GMT. There is a vassal module for that which you could derive a map from.

The numbers given in the Nihon Senshi series by the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff in 1908 for the battle are probably dubious. But that gives:

Tokugawa army:
Right wing under Ieyasu: 3,300
Left wing under Ii Naomasa: 3,000
Centre under Oda Nobuo: 3,000

Mori-Ikeda army:
Right wing under Ikeda Motosuke and Ikeda Terumasa: 4,000
Left wing under Mori Nagayoshi: 3,000
Rear under Ikeda Tsuneoki: 2,000

Many thanks!  There's a nice image of the "Ran" map on boardgamegeek.com.  Looks like a very interesting terrain to do battle upon!

You can also get the map from the GMT games section on 'Ran,' now I think about it.

Brian Bradford's "Tokugawa's Battles" supplement for Killer Katanas covers this battle (and Domyoji). It can be found on eBay, it's expensive for a short pamphlet, but probably has the info you need. I don't have my copy to hand right now so can't say specifically what detail it has, but it should have a relatively detailed map.
Admittedly not an online resource, but it might be a hard subject to find info on online, without reading Japanese.

The author's of 'Ran' credit Bradford with the maps and OOBs for the game, so I imagine the Ran map is the same as the KK one. It will ultimately derive from the one in the Nihon Senshi volume on Nagakute.
