Help - 10mm WSS figure comparison.
« on: 14 February 2023, 01:11:56 AM »
Greetings folks. As the title states I'm after some help with some 10mm figures.
I've wanted to do War of Spanish Succession for quite a while (a 28mm project fell through several years back) and I have just discovered 10mm and I think it's just the right scale for WSS. I just received the Pendraken 10mm French Army pack and they look fine to me but I want to add some extras, especially in the way of command and also some alternative figure poses for other battalions.

I've seen Van Dyke miniatures and I'm wondering if anyone knows if they are comparable with Pedraken and are there any other 10mm manufacturers out there that scale well with either of these two?

Cheers and thanks for any help.

A good choice with Pendraken!

I’m not aware of Van Dyke’s WSS figures, but the view on their WWI figures is they are broadly comparable with Pendraken - I think perhaps a bit more slender.

Always worth a look in Pendraken’s adjacent ranges too, so LoA (very nice figures) and 7YW as well to add some variety or different troop types.

I have gone with collecting lead from Pendraken (for a future project).  As fred said, I have borrowed from the LOA range especially for command and some other figures.  Haven't looked at the SYW and will have a quick look to se if thee is anything I would want.

I dod look briefly at the Van Dyke and while they are spectacular sculpts and castings I thought teh size was going to be bigger as well as the price - which wouldn't matter too much if it is just to add extras.

Melnibonean, I've just looked at the Van Dyck website. The figures are truly beautiful but seem to be 12-13mm from foot to top-of-head. That's quite a bit bigger than 10mm! Might be worth measuring your Pendraken models to assess compatability. They also seem to be about 50% more expensive than Pendraken.

I only have Pendraken's Vietnam 10 mm figures and they seem on the smaller side.  Recently acquired a painted "10 mm" Seven Years War Army that needed a few adds and I ended up buying figures from Old Glory 25s 10 mm range - the old Magnificent Little Soldier Company figures.  Think what I bought were actually 12 mm.  The OG figures were a tad smaller but workable.  And, as suggested, I bought from the WSS (Marlburian) and AWI range to add variety of poses for generals - a prinicpal need.  Not sure how they might match Pendraken and the packs are pretty large in numbers but might want to look into those figures as well.  After putting my SYW figures into a game, I decided I need to round out the collection and again went with OG 10 mm range.  One challenge will be that some of the range are in strips of figures a bit hard (not impossible) to separate and I think all of the Pendraken ranges are individual figures.  Never heard of the Van Dyck figures before so will check them out.

10 mm is a good size, especially when you need lots of units.  I am using 6 mm buildings with my 10 mm and they work great.

If you google 10mm Wargames you will find a site that lists all 10mm sellers.
I know I have seen WSS figures on some of their sites.

Thanks for the help guys.
I did purchase some Van Dick figures: mainly command and their French box. The mounted command look like beautiful figures and they will be used exclusively to make some higher command vignettes. I figure, if the miniatures don't match I can use them to make some distinctive units like guards of maybe the Wild Geese battalions. Or maybe just paint them up and sell them.

Having taken your sound advice I have looked at the Pendraken LoA and SYW ranges and they look like what I was after. So I'll go with that strategy in the future. I'm sure that now I've found a way to do WSS in a manner that appeals, I'll have to make many, many, many more battalions and squadrons in the future.

Cheers and thanks,
IanKH

Noted a key difference between Pendraken and Van Dyk.  VD=1/444th versus P=1/150th.  Which explains why the Pendraken seem smaller - they are designed to a different scale than other ranges.  Makes me wonder what those 1/200th range figures are like if they still exist (WWII).

As to the "many more battalions and squadrons", in 10 mm they are easier to paint since you don't need so much detail.  In this scale/size the whole "good enough" concept works really well.

Good luck and let us see your progress along the way if you can.
