that was the fashan in Ireland at the time. 
It is thought to be influenced by the old houppelande long sleeved fashion.

This was the fashion in Ireland and the Highlands/Isles of Scotland in the 15th-16th centuries.  It's called a Leine and it is 100% accurate.  Only thing I find daft about this is your comment as I would have expected someone who sculpts Japanese architecture to be a bit more sympathetic towards impractical sleeves as these are virtually identical to many forms of kimono worn around the same time.

Oh, believe me, I think some of the Japanese fashions of the sengoku period daft as well
