Sopwith Pup of the Royal Flying Corps
« on: April 15, 2023, 01:10:46 PM »

Yes, I know that you can buy loads of prepainted bi-planes from the Great War, but painting is more than half of the joy of owning a model for me.

These are 1/144th scale models printed in resin. The wingspan is 55mm and the lenght is 43mm, thus rather small and equal to the prepainted Wings of War models.

The prints are excellent and show a lot of details. I don't own any of the prepainted plastic injection moulded models, but can't imagine that those are any better.

Now it's time for Captain Blackadder and Lieutenant George to man their machines and show the Red Baron that not only Lord Fleshhart is a threat...

Beautiful job, Michi. I have printed these same STL files in 6mm and the details are preserved. The two seaters have been released too and are just as good. Will post the photos when I can.

As to roundels, there are a couple of options. With 6mm, I use decals including options like playing card symbols and other examples of personalised graphics that were painted on WW1 planes. The other option is to use CAD software to modify the source STL files slightly, adding almost imperceptible scoring to the wings and fuselage that mark the outline of the roundels.

Lon for the roundels, decals are probably a good way to go. I've repainted a few Wings of War planes as well as Shapeways 3d prints and anything that isn't perfect, looks really obvious. Even the tricolour on the tail is really difficult to get perfectly straight.

Michi these look really good, I've played a lot of WoG over the last 3 years and really enjoyed it. There are some very good AI rules to play solo if that floats your boat. Have a look at the Wings of Glory Aerodrome site for some inspiration. There's a section OTT where we're playing an ongoing campaign, I've posted quite a few games there but look for Mikeemagnus, his scenery is very good.

Thank you all for the kind words!  :)

Do you have any advice on painting the rondels?

Are you talking about a tutorial? I went for two shades of every colour to make them look a bit more interesting, although this wouldn't be in reality. The real thing is painted simply in red white and blue. Yes - exactly in this order I painted them: Red, white and blue. This picture shows what I mean:

On the left plane you can clearly spot the red paint under the cream layer. I find it easiest when painting details to start with the colour and then trim the shape with the next colour. This means that I painted a white ring on a red surface to receive a circular red dot. The white was actually cream, but I painted a white ring over it. You can spot that on the wing top and fuselage of the left plane. Next is a blue ring around the white one to trim the white into an actual ring. Again there was a lighter blue ring painted over the darker blue and finally another white ring around the blue to trim it. Last comes the main surface colour to trim the entire roundel and then cover the rest of the unmarked surfaces. That's it. I also paint eyes that way and do lettering. The results are usaually much better than trying to write letters or numbers with a brush and eyes can be kept smaller to avoid that staring gaze of many eyes painted over flesh. I use flesh to trim the previously painted white and black eyes. I hope this is of any help...

Those look great, and the freehand roundels are impressive.

Those Sopwith Pups need an opponent I thought. The only model I had left was from the southern front, but who cares? Now it's Austrians vs. British:
