The National Trust are delighted to be able to present 'Wargaming the Age of the Anglo-Saxons' at Sutton Hoo, the iconic Anglo-Saxon burial ground in Suffolk (United Kingdom), on Sunday 30th July 2023. Entry is free with general site admission.

James Morris and Chums will be bringing two participation games: the first will be a 28mm Battle of the River Idle, the great victory of Raedwald of East Anglia (the supposed Sutton Hoo king) over Aethelfrith of Northumbria in 616. The second will be a 15/18mm Battle of Degsastan in 603, the battle that saw Aethelfrith of Northumbria destroy the alliance of Picts, Scots Irish and Northern Britons thereby allowing him to take control of the North.

As well as participation games, there will be an opportunity to speed-paint a FREE plastic Anglo-Saxon thegn (courtesy of Gripping Beast Miniatures) which will be ideal for the slightly younger visitor.

There will also be Anglo-Saxon re-enactors from the Sae Wylfings group onsite on the day, thereby making this the perfect Dark Age day out!

It would be lovely to see some gamers there - I'll be working onsite with James and co all day chatting with visitors and supporting the gaming and painting so do come and say 'hello' if you pop along! I'll be the bald chap with the blue National Trust lanyard on!

I wish I could make it down but I don't think I could justify this among all the other events I've been playing catch up with this year!

It looks really special and I look for ward to reading the reports, seeing the piccies and following in my imagination :)

I adore this period of English history (7th c) so as someone on the other side of the pond, I am very jealous.

Very much looking forward to this! Drop in if you’re in the area and apologies to those who are too far away.
