I was at Historicon 2023 and agree with your thoughts on the Con - the Commonwealth Hall was dark unless you were in the central area.
The 8 hour drive from Montreal was easy, even had a laugh with the Border Agent when he found out I was going to play with “toy soldiers”. Dare not say ‘wargaming’ as one gets an interrogation.
HMGS have got the registration down to an art though last year they had 4 machines to print out tickets.
The tickets for unfulfilled games was odd this year, usually they have a rack with them hanging up in order but I suppose you cannot do that with the new printed tickets.
I played in two TFL games:
1) CoC Panzer Lehr Breakout where I lost 2 Panthers trying to follow the game requirement of getting tanks off table ☹️, one to a very, very lucky bazooka shot and the second to a mad dash down the road that left me sitting in front of an M10 on overwatch.
2) Sharpe Practice Battle of Setauket Long Island, based on the Turn tv series. It was good but the GM forgot to explain the rules and some of us first time players were a little lost to start with.
Overall I thought the Con was a little down on numbers from 2022 as Thursday night had very few games on and the place seemed empty when I left at 8.30pm on Saturday evening. Little Wars TV think otherwise on their review so maybe it was that the games being run did not interest me.
But I feel it was better than 2022.
I too used offsite accommodation but made sure that I got to the Con by 8am to make sure I got a reasonable parking space.
I was intending to drop Historicon in favour of Cold Wars and Fall In but it looks like Cold Wars is not going to happen as they have not found a convention director yet.
