Tengu Models?
« on: 25 August 2023, 04:00:11 PM »
I'm looking to fill out the Mythological Creatures from the Ronin PDF for my collection, but am having some trouble locating a single, decent Tengu model. I'm still on the fence on whether I want more avian or more long-nosed, so no real preference there atm.

Any suggestions?

A basic google image search turns up a number of options.  Which ones have you ruled out as not decent enough?

That's a fantastic question and would have made sense to include. ha!
I guess I'm looking for something that's a bit more simple in design to match the Northstar Ronin buntais. There's a bird-like samurai from Reaper Bones that I think might be the best fit for now.

I have the Malifaux set. Not cheap but nice figures. I'm sure there are some on ETSY as well. From memory the Reaper Bones are good figures but quite small.

Zenit Miniatures can be a smidge pricey and the figures are multipart so bring out your heavy-duty adhesives and brass rods and drill presses, but they have a very extensive range of mythological creatures:

For Tengu, which they have under 'Earthly Creatures', they do both the sort of full bird-person and the big-nosed red-skinned versions.

Also not inexpensive, and more avian but these are really nice:

The Dixon ones are fairly simple and properly old-school (though they're karasu-tengu rather than the better-known long-nosed goblins):

Think they may be by Mark Copplestone too, which might help them fit with North Star stuff.

These might be the perfect set as the Bones samurai tengu doesn’t have wings and in Ronin tengu have the Fly (or is it Flight) attribute.

Is there any place in the US that sell Dixon minis?

I'm not sure if there is. Dixon's postage to the US doesn't look too bad at £8; the tengu pair, at £11, is much more expensive than the others in the range (because of the wings, I assume), but the oni and bakemono goblins are pretty cheap at under £3 for the big ones and £1.95 or £1.75 for the small ones. So you might be able to put together a bargain warband of supernatural beings that would make the postage worthwhile.

This oni (at £1.95) epitomises fantastical Japanese gaming for me:

(If it's any help, I'm likely to be making a small, nostalgic order in the next couple of months and would happily pick up the tengu and post them over to you at cost. But I'm not sure if that would be any cheaper - and it would certainly be slower!)

Warlord do a set for Erehwon called 'Tengu' :

although they have those grotesque 'mask' faces rather than avian ones.
