We genuine magic users - supposedly 7,000 years worth in the family (how they got that number I'm not sure but I'm guessing it is the list of lineage names, very long and calculates about right for that length of time) - do not reveal our secrets.

They tell me I am the most powerful magic user in several thousand years but I'm not sure I believe that.  And, no I can't do a lot of things you are all thinking of (win the lottery for example), it's not like that.  And there are very strict rules.  Violating those rules is really, really dangerous.  It's more about protection than power - the 'white' side, not the 'dark' side.  But there are also those windows into things, people, places.  Don't worry Vanvlak, I won't reveal that secret you want to keep hidden - those rules, you see.  That leads to the dark side and, believe me, I - and you - don't want to go there.  Really.
