Space Dwarves - Availability and Comparisons
« on: October 14, 2023, 06:05:00 PM »
Squats were good silly fun and certainly not grim dark enough for some.
I still much prefer these old-school Space Dwarves over the newer Votann, but with their availability limited and prices correspondingly high; expanding the scope of an army to include non-GW model ranges, as well as printable options, definitely makes sense.

My hunt for alternatives brought me across some useful resources, like:
Arbitor Ian's The great Squat Model Review video,
eilif's Cheap Sprue Review: WGA Einherjar Space Dwarves and a Squat Roundup,
and the Frothers Unite Space Dwarf Showcase.
Unfortunately these sources of information quickly become outdated; with a couple of Ian’s featured models seemingly discontinued and the vast majority of the models on the Frothers United list MIA.
Of course miniature sellers move on from the hobby or simply retire, leaving sculpts unavailable or the moulds changing hands and being difficult to trace. It’s a shame and I wonder if miniatures are one of the more problematic industries for this sort of thing. I suppose there are a lot of one person operations, with many of them run as a hobby.

I thought I’d detail what I discovered on my collecting journey, as this is exactly the kind of information that would have been really useful to me when I started down this path.
I’d like to do comparisons with all the model ranges I have, especially in regards to height, but to start with; just a list of everything I’ve found feels like the most useful information, since some of these sellers were pretty hard to find.

(I'm not being sponsored, although I have been asked to give a shout out by a seller or two, which encouraged me to start this thread)

Physical Model Sellers:

Uscarl Miniatures (France) - http://uscarlminis.free.fr/UM_SCI-FI_uk.htm
8 metal models plus accessories. Their spare heads and arms would be good replacements for plastic and armless Squats.

Skull & Crown Miniatures (USA) - https://www.skullncrown.com/
18 metal models. Some of the armoured units look very similar to the original Irn Bonce the Squat model.

Old School Miniatures (UK) - https://www.oldschoolminiatures.co.uk/dwarfs-in-space
5 metal models. These are recent releases of a couple of mechs and a few character models. They also have lots of Chaos Space Dwarves.

MSD Games (USA) - http://msdgames.com/epages/bccb46a7-1a07-48ac-8a77-e8e6cce9e958.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/bccb46a7-1a07-48ac-8a77-e8e6cce9e958/Categories/KRYOMEK/KRYOMEK%7CALIENS/%22KRYOMEK%7CALIENS%7CGALACTIC%20WARRIORS%22
6 metal models. These were previously the Simtec dwarves and appear to be a Bob Olley sculpt. One of the very few models from he Frothers United showcase that are still available.

Victoria Miniatures (USA) - https://victoriaminiatures.com/collections/character-miniatures/products/roli-runeseeker-dwarf-mercenary
1 resin model. They mainly do interesting Imperial Guard type squads.

Grimforge (Italy) - https://www.grim-forge.com/en/categoria-prodotto/28mm-en/
2 metal models. Nice squat proxies. One of them has two weapon options.

Geek Salad Miniatures (UK) - https://www.geeksaladminiatures.co.uk/?fbclid=IwAR2weDxjvrK19XW6w9UIPmFiuZkt52OxgOOb7q9yoXl26CeYNQAmWdqGAwI
2 metal models. Theses are 32mm scale and made for Bloodbowl, so not a great match for Squats, but interesting sculpts.

Hagen Miniatures (Germany) - https://www.hagen-miniatures.de/test-category-17/figures-20/fantasy-and-sf/gobbo-land-458/command-group-2410-2420.html
5 metal models. These are purposely wonky sculpts for that Rogue Trader look. They also have Traitor Space Dwarves.

Ontos Games (UK) - https://ontosgames.co.uk/
5 resin models. These are seemingly inspired by the unreleased 2nd Ed Squat warrior model.

Satyr Art Studio (USA) - https://satyrartstudio.ecwid.com/
13 metal models. Some come with flying surfboards, nuff said.

Bad Squiddo Games (UK) - https://badsquiddogames.com/shop#!/Barb-Space-Dwarf/p/109685632
1 metal model. This is an interesting female dwarf sculpt.

Fenryll (France) - https://fenryll.com/en/science-fiction/103-dwarves-squad.html
3 Resin models. The only other hold out from the Frothers list.

Diehard Minis (UK) - https://diehardminiatures.com/product-category/dwarf/
4 metal models. A little tall and high tech looking, but nice sculpts.

Wargames Atlantic (USA) - https://wargamesatlantic.com/products/einherjar
24 plastic models. Each box only has 3 body types, but comes with lots of head, arm and weapon customisation. Arms and heads could be used on Squats, but the arms are a little thin and the heads a touch small.

Bits of War Kromlech (Poland) - https://bitsofwar.com/24-dvergr-commando
23 resin models. Nice and chunky commandos, although their gear looks a little contemporary.

Battle Valor Games (USA) - https://www.battlevalorgames.com/shop/28mm-sci-fi-figures/20?page=2&limit=60&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc
57 metal models. Nice models, although some of the guns are a bit long and thin for casting metal.

Macrocosm (UK) - https://www.macrocosm.co.uk/product-category/macrocosm/space-dwarves-macrocosm/
Lots of metal models, with some larger parts being resin. Really good range of space dwarves that fit in well next to Squats and with new models sculpted by Inso in the works. They also have Chaos and Mutant Space Dwarves. Some models that used to be sold by Macrocosm can now be found on the Checkpoint Models and Warblade Miniatures websites.

Checkpoint Models (UK) - https://cpmodels.co.uk/product-category/28mm-ranges/28mm-sci-fi/runts-space-dwarfs/
Lots of metal models. Some are a bit large and soft looking, while others are much closer to fitting well with Squats. Some of their new Dwarf models used to be part of the Macrocosm model lines.

Warblade Miniatures (UK) - https://warblademiniatures.com/collections/28mm-space-dwarves
Lots of metal dwarf models, plus some Ratling Snipers. Some of their new Dwarf models used to be part of the Macrocosm model lines.

Scibor (Poland) - https://www.sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?group=192
Lots of Resin models. These are tall yet power-armour clad models, so may still fit in well.

Mantic (UK) - https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/forge-fathers/
Lots of plastic models. These are generally a bit tall, but the Militia models fit in nicely, as do their Iron Ancestor Mechs.

Ramshackle (UK) – https://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/26-dwarves
Lots of resin models. These are mostly biker models, with a good amount of variety to them

Gydran Studios (UK) - https://www.gydran.studio/product-category/sci-fi-dwarfs/
Lots of resin models. A wide selection of mostly power armoured dwarves.

Heresy Miniatures - https://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_18_19&products_id=7
One metal model. It comes with multiple head, arm and weapon options and looks suitable for easy modding. Heresy also have the Sharclon Brutality Squad, which is also dwarf-esque, but would probably better fit as a Demiurg stand-in.

Resin Lab Models (Spain) – https://www.facebook.com/p/Resinlab-Models-100052188321446/
4 resin models. These are currently available on ebay: https://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=henrich5

RPE Miniatures & Games (UK) - https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/old-school-scifi-28mm-c-271/
3 metal models. 3 in power armour and 2 mercs, plus a squad of Ratling Snipers.

L72's Metal Minature Musings (UK) - https://l72smetalminiaturesmusings.wordpress.com/2023/11/26/space-dwarfs/
Lots of resin models. A large collection of dwarf models based on popular culture characters, with some new sculpts of RT Squat looking Space Dwarves.

Predastore (Swiss) - https://predastore.ch/en/20-the-huge-army-of-dwarfs
A good selection of resin models. The store has recently been relaunched with a bigger selection of minis, with some of the old ones re-worked.

Traders Galaxy (AUS) - https://tradersgalaxy.com.au/product-category/sci-fi/space-dwarfs/
11 metal models. Some in power armour, which is of great interest to me.

Antediluvian miniatures (UK) - https://antediluvianminiatures.wordpress.com/2018/10/07/shop-sci-fi-range/
1 metal model.

Rapier Miniatures (UK) - https://rapierminiatures.com/product-category/28mm/general-fantasy/
2 metal models.

Red Bard Games (Spain) - https://redbardgames.com/categoria-producto/space-fantasy/space-dwarves/?v=6e0920aaa21c
9 printed models. Great looking RT retro dwarves.

Wargames Foundry (UK) - https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/products/fc11-alice-white-the-slippery-dwarves-preorder?_pos=1&_sid=f49c012e3&_ss=r
8 metal models. I haven't gotten hold of any of these yet.

Killer B Games (UK) - https://killerbgames.co.uk/shop/ols/categories/galactic-adventures-in-the-fourth-dimension-of-the-forbidden-zone?page=1
6 metal models. I recently learned that Kiler B Games had purchased some of the Bob Olley Scrunt sculpts; namely the 3 model Clean Up crew, then made modified versions of them, holding different weapons.
Unfortunately they are currently out of stock and not shown on the website.

Ginfritter's Gnomish Workshop (US) - https://ginfritter.com/gfsd100-the-seven-space-dwarfs/
7 metal? Models. I haven't gotten hold of any of these yet.

Reaper Minis - https://www.reapermini.com/search/chronoscope%20dwarf
3 metal models. I haven't gotten hold of any of these yet.

Mini War Gaming - Immari from the Upcoming Ravaged Star game.

Hasslefree Miniatures - https://hfminis.co.uk/product-category/sci-fi-weird-war/grymn-close-combat/
Metal models. I don't personally don't think these models are Space Dwarfy enough, but they are mentioned by both Ian and Frothers, so I should probably include them. (Possible delays may occur, as discussed in posts below)

Hardcore Miniatures (USA) - https://hardcore-miniatures.com/shop#w--ul-id-63-2/SPACE-DWARVES/c/101947235--w
Resin and 3D printed models. It looks like they are winding down their cast resin model range and are instead releasing their digital sculpts on MyMiniFactory, while offering physical 3D printed versions on their website.

Black Tree Design/EOE Orbis
The old Harlequin sculpts, decent Squat proxy models.
From my personal experience; I wouldn't recommend trying to purchase anything from them.
After two months of zero communication and having reached out multiple times; I had to give up and get a refund.
A real shame.

Kickstarters:

Scibor Monstrous Miniatures are running a Kickstarter for a few new squads of their cool looking steam-punk-esque armoured Dwarves.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scibor/sci-fi-and-steampunk-dwarves?ref=discovery&term=dwarf&total_hits=2529&category_id=34
Hoping these do well and reach the stretch goals. The campaign will end on the 14th on May, so check it out.

Magglet (spain) - https://www.facebook.com/maggletminiaturas/
Lots of resin models. These are only available from their Kickstarter campaigns. the most recent one ended in March 2025.

Unavailable Minis?
Who knows, with enough interest maybe some of these models can be brought back.

Wereweevil Miniatures (AUS) - https://www.wereweevilminiatures.com/shop
Un unfortunate recent closure. Resin models. These were largely Exo-suited dwarfs, with some regular troopers.

Bridge Miniatures - https://bridgeminiatures.com/product-category/mutants-madmen/mutants-madmen-dvargs/
Metal models. While the page may still be up; they've been out of stock for a while.

Moonfleet Miniatures.
Unfortunately these sellers closed down their site just last year. They had a small range of decent looking Space Dwarf models.

Bob Olley - http://www.olleysarmies.co.uk/home.html#galleries
This is possibly the saddest closure, as the range was extensive an looked really good, but as I understand it the moulds have been auctioned off and the vast majority went to an individual who isn't selling new casts. Killer B Games bought one of the model sets and are selling them.

There's also all the other model ranges mentioned in the Frothers Unite Showcase. I personally really liked the Enigma miniatures.

I hope this list was helpful to some of you and please feel free to mention anything I may have missed, got wrong or has changed. I'll do my best to update this list, at least for a while.
Photos and comparisons of all the models I have been able to collect to follow.

Cheers

I know they don't quite match the original Squat look, but unlike the main Votann range for 40k, Games Workshop / Forge World make some Squat models for Necromunda that feel much closer to the RT look than the 40k range does:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/necromunda-ironhead-squat-prospectors-2022

https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/searchResults?_dyncharset=UTF-8&_dynSessConf=-2313420981920975282&qty=&sorting=&view=&Ntt=squats

The Bounty Hunter and Ammo-Jack from Forge World in particular feel very retro, with the Bounty Hunter even featuring a hint of quilted armor.

You could add the sharclons and miner from Heresy:
https://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_18_19&products_id=7
https://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=127&products_id=554

I would definitely add the predastore Spetsnains, which are lovely:
https://www.predastore.ch/lang-en/13-28mm-spetsnains

Thanks for the additions.
The miner model is on the Frothers list, but I must have written it off as not being on-theme and not bothered searching for it. Looking at it now though it's a decent model and while the weapons look a bit 19th century; they appear easy to convert and it's not as if such weaponry can't still be found in 40k anyway. Separate heads and spare arms also make it great for some spare parts for other models. A really good addition.

Less sure about the Sharclons, as they look a little too alien for me, but I'll add them to the list.

Now the Spetsnains are indeed lovely. Definitely going to have to grab these models.

Thanks for suggesting them. Yes these models sit in an odd middle ground between the old and the new. I think I could get on with them more if they weren't so large. People's mileage may very on this; since the lore that the Squats became shorter due to living on high gravity planets for millennia means that some colonies on less high gravity worlds would on average be taller makes sense. Not too sure about the Prospectors, but the forge World models are pretty big.

I know GW models are generally getting larger, but this is too much for me.
Also as an aside; I really don't like the Bounty Hunter model. I wasn't sure what it was about it that made it appear off, but looking more closely I think it's that the head is far too small for the body.

Does Hassle free still count as in production? I've heard lately they've had serious delays. I think the chap in charge is seriously ill and can't keep up with the orders so there's months delays.

Hasslefree is... complicated...

Artemis does start pretty much every update with "I've been ill", but I think they have staff in to cover for him, so general ordering isn't too bad (having said that, I haven't ordered from them in months, just in case). Their SF Kickstarter that was due to deliver April this year, however, is heavily affected by his illness :(

On the space dwarf front, there are a few Reaper Chronoscope ones to consider - https://www.reapermini.com/search/chronoscope%20dwarf

I have the Willy Brssbender figure, and it is tiny, so I'm not sure how heavy the gravity was on his world ;D

Ha! I made the old Frothers' Squat showcase. Must've been around 2003-2004 if I remember well. Completely outdated now in fact.

Thanks for clarifying that. I'll keep an eye on their shop and KS campaign and adjust their status accordingly.

I'll add the reaper models as well. Must be very close to the galactic centre.

While outdated; it's a really useful snapshot of the state of Space Dwarf miniatures at that point and it's impressive that all the pictures are still working on a 20 year old article.
I just hope this thread can become anywhere near as useful as yours was and still is.

Fantastic thread with lots of great information!

I did a review a while back that might be useful.
https://www.chicagoskirmishwargames.com/blog/2022/10/cheap-sprue-review-wga-einherjar-space-dwarves-and-a-squat-roundup/
A comparison of the WGA Einherjar and a variety of Space Dwarf models spanning from original plastic and metal Squats to Votaan and quite a few in between.  I did my best to provide actual MM measurements to the eyeline for all figures so folks can get an idea of compatibility with other ranges.

Thanks, your Einherjar comparison was another important source of inspiration for this thread and what I hope to turn it into.
Pictures on shop sites are really not that useful when trying to create a cohesive army of similarly sized and proportioned miniatures, so showing different model lines side by side is really useful. I'm aiming to do that with at least 1 model from all the physical model lines on this list.

I will do something similar with the digital files, but that will be more of a comparison of proportions, since these model files can be scaled to whatever's needed, within reason.

I’ve decided to separate out all the 3D printable models, as they are a completely different thing to buying physical miniatures and I have so many of them to list.

3D Printable Models:

Kickstarters:

Nothing currently running.

Tablehammer - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tablehammer/federation-of-tyr-3d-printable-files-for-tabletop-and-rpgs?ref=discovery_newest&term=dwarves
Lots of digital files. This Kickstarter campaign is now closed. Files available on MyMiniFactory, if you missed the campaign.

Forged in Fury Miniatures - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/voidbornkin/the-void-born-kin/description
Lots of digital files. This Kickstarter campaign is now closed, but the files are now available on MyMiniFactory. A free model from the campaign can be found on Thingiverse and Cults3D
They currently have a Patreon that is releasing new models for their dwarf army.

Space Dwarf models of all kinds:

One Page Rules - https://www.patreon.com/onepagerules/posts
Lots of digital files. They are currently on the second month (October) of creating a Space Dwarf army over on their Patreon. They are expected to release models for this range over a 6 month period.

Capritor Miniatures - https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-tactical-space-dwarf-army-all-10-squads-extras-kickstarter-package-70-models-284198
Over 100 digital files. These models have a 'gears of war' feel to their bulky tech armour and the army bundle is one of the best value .STL packs I've found.

Lafig Miniatures - https://cults3d.com/en/design-collections/lafigminiatures/space-dwarfs
12 digital files. These really look like they were hand sculpted. Really solid RT look to them.

Ill Gotten Games - https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-sons-of-dvalinn-96037
11 digital files. Nice miner models.

Bob Naismith - https://www.bobnaismith.com/product/dorf-infantry/
14 digital files. Very chunky designs.

Red Nebular: - https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Red%20Nebular/collection/space-dwaves

Kyoushuneko Miniatures - https://www.myminifactory.com/users/kyoushuneko/collection/cyberpunk-squat-dwarves

McAngry - https://www.myminifactory.com/users/McAngry%20Minis/collection/dwarven-guard
73 digital files.

DropMiniz - https://www.myminifactory.com/users/DropMiniz
35 Digital files. They have some interesting units like hog riders.

Hardcore Miniatures - https://www.myminifactory.com/users/RealHardcoreMiniatures/collection/space-dwarves
Lots of digital files. An expanding collection of printable miniatures that are replacing their physical models.

Titan Forge Miniatures - https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-cyberforge-kill-and-drill-gorrtech-306371
15 Digital files. Part of their Cyber Forge range.

50 digital files.

Treadhead Rad - https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Treadhead%20Rad/collection/supermassive-space-dwarves
40 digital files.

The Exotic Greeble - https://cults3d.com/en/users/TheExoticGreeble/3d-models
Their collection of close Votann proxies have been removed from Cults, but they are now working on a more unique faction of Space Dwarf miners.

Stand’art painting - https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-space-dwarf-9-heads-275080
Space dwarf heads.

Orfey - https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-futuristic-dwarf-heads-beards-motorcycles-and-warm-beer-30-heads-268217
Both male and female Space Dwarf heads.

These models are ones that suit my specific requirements less well, either because they look too close to the Votann style of dwarf, or are just doing something too different from what I'm after, but others may find exactly what they're looking for:

I’ve been making 28mm vehicles from the 6mm epic Squat versions, as well as Dwarves in Space Marine armour. I’m planning to make a full chapter of them, as least digitally, but we’ll see if I have the attention span for that.

Possible future section about Fantasy Dwarves that suit modifying, or are suitable to be added as is.

There's a new Kickstarter from Drop Miniz for Mining terrain ends 3rd Dec:

However their Space Dwarf files can be added to your pledge as add-ons.
