Leviathan Tyranids fully painted
« on: October 20, 2023, 07:27:07 PM »
Got my dirty hands on the Leviathan box on release. The plan is to paint them up for my boys to bring them into the hobby - the next step after Space Hulk.

On to the models. The paintjob is simple but efficient with a lot of dry brushing and then some details. The termagaunts are solid models, but I prefer the neurogaunts in the box (and plan to buy hornagaunts). I love the kroot hound likeness of the neurogaunts and the Kroot beaks.

I had high expectations for the barbgaunts but was disappointed. Most pictures show a side view of them, but I found them rather “flat”. A bit more bulk would have been nice, and I’m not good enough with green stuff for that.

The Von Ryan’s Leapers are nice models though rather brittle. I’m not sure how well they will take the wear an tear of Kids’ gaming. The Neurotyrant and his “babies” is one of my favourites, though I probably did not do the model justice with my paintjob.

Not sure what to make of the Winged Tyranid Prime. It’s a nice enough model but I can’t stop thinking it could have been better. Just a gut feeling, but there it is. And when Goonhammer is to believed it’s the same rules wise.

The Psychophage is a cool model and I’m sure others will do much more with it paint wise. As for the rules I expected it to fire spore mines or the like, but apparently it’s another close combat critter.

Finally the Screamer-Killer, my absolute favourite in this group. This is what I envision alien close combat monsters to look like. It towers over the rest of the army and is an absolute menace - and the boys love him already.

So what’s not to like? You get a nice mix of chaff and monsters, more than with the combat patrol (which you could play without adding any models). But you do not get enough models for 1.000 points, and I have been told the psychopharge is rather useless if you don’t face any psycher. With the broodlord and genestealers from space hulk I should be able to field 1.000 points, but I’ll probably need some hornagaunts and another two or three monsters for the boys to play properly.

Well done on getting this project done, for now.

Good work and luck teaching the boys.

Thanks

Good work, I like the scheme, and good for getting the whole set done.

The Tyranid Prime does look a bit odd - are the wings on the right way up? Having the wings low and to the side does look a bit strange.

Thanks guys!

@fred The wings of the Tyranid Prime should be assembled correctly. The pose is the reason why I think the model is a missed chance. The model is not bad, but it could be much better.
