Looking for 30mm-ish scale spears for 28mm minis
« on: October 22, 2023, 02:10:20 PM »
Hi,
firstly I'm new here, so apologies if this should be posted in another sub-forum!
I've got two armies to finish kitting out and painting this next year or two, one based in Roman era and the other on early/mid Medieval era. Kits range across GrippingBeast, Fireforge, WarlordGames and Victrix mostly, with smallest scale being Imperial Roman legionnaires from WarlordGames and largest probably being Norman infantry from Victrix. With all of them, I'm becoming saddened by the spear tips / spearheads – from a distance I can't easily make them out. In this respect I'd like to depart from historical realism a little bit and give all of the spear wielders a larger spear tip, with most likely a triangle / diamond shape which again can be picked out from a few yards as a classic shape. However I'm having trouble finding them online; I can find Warhammer scale (I guess roughly 32mm scale) spears being sold which are comically oversized on my 28mm figures, but I'm not finding something in between. If anyone knew of a maker out there who offers these halfway scale tips, please let me know. I've even thought outside the box a bit and tried looking for say 54mm troops with arrows, in the hope that the arrow tips might serve such a purpose, but no luck yet.
If I could be more specific, I think the spearhead I'm looking for, at its wides point, would be 3mm. As opposed to say Fireforge/GrippingBeast spearheads which would be 2mm or lower, whilst Warhammer spearheads would be 5mm and higher.
I've asked the same question on a site called TMP and suggestions there have been Northstar and Old Glory, but both options look either equal in size or smaller in size to the Fireforge ones etc, alas.

KR,
Mat

Welcome to LAF, hopefully you see things to interest you beyond your initial question and stick around a bit (I’d strongly recommend here over TMP).

As to spears - Pendraken offer these https://www.pendraken.co.uk/50mm-spears-with-spear-tip-x30-7436-p.asp in a variety of lengths.

If none of the metal ones suit, then perhaps a 3d printed spearhead is an option, not that I’d really fancy adding dozens of spear heads to my figures!

Thanks Fred, I've passed by LAF before just to view threads, a particularly useful one on war elephants to guide me to 1st corps option, beautiful beast!

That Pendraken one, alas with the spear shaft being 0.7mm, looks like the spearhead will at most be 1.4/1.5mm so a bit short of what I'm looking for. Indeed I may ultimately have to go with some sort of custom design from somewhere. If only we could have gone back in time and convinced Warhammer team to make all their stuff just a bit smaller!

I’m sure the Warhammer stuff was smaller once upon a time - but the weapons have become even more ‘heroic’ than the figures over the years.

Fireforge plastic spears are pretty chunky, like 1.2mm. Limit to what you can fit in a 28mm hand. Heads are not huge though, may not be what you want.

Maybe turn to a 3d printing service, see if they can print something just right for you.

Brass rod. Flatten end with a hammer, file to a point; only needs a couple of strokes of the file

True the Fireforge 5cm spear pack, it's the best of the 28mm bunch I've come across, but the spearhead itself is as you say, not much bigger than shaft and only noticeable from maybe 2 angles.

Sure I'll try that filing idea next.

That set, not so much as they're halberds mostly, but I see they have a set that's just spears. 28-30mm, interesting! Looks like they have a lot of other random accessories in that 'scale' too. Many thanks for suggestion there.

Just a little update to round this off; the 'spikey bits' from Waylandgames will do just fine, although I've bought what stock of them was left and I doubt any more will come, so what I've got'll satisfy most of the spear troops and probably a dozen or so will need something else.

Picture showing crude testing with bits in place. GrippingBeast viking hirdman on left, then on right is GrippingBeast dark age warrior body + Fireforge western knight head + Wargamesfoundry Norman kiteshield - his spear is too short but shall fix that before he's table-ready. Compared to original spearheads, the new ones are only slightly wider (3mm) at widest point but the main difference is that there's not really any flat 'sides' of the spearhead now - more of a diamond shape with head always wider than spear shaft at any angle. Again just a quirk for my beholding eyes!

Been doing this for years. It works great.

Bit late (sorry!), but I was going to suggest the 100mm spears available from North Star (and one or two others).  These can be cut into three, and still leave you with enough excess to flatten into the sort of larger spearhead that you want.
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Thanks Wreckoften and Aethelflaedaisguilty, yep I think I will end up doing a custom job like that for a handful of the spearmen towards the end of the project!
