Dean’s Saga AoM odyssey (Completed)
« on: November 04, 2023, 07:15:42 PM »
As noted elsewhere, after a long break I have found the joy of miniature gaming again.  Back in the day I played 15mm Napoleonics and various historical skirmish games, before getting into roleplaying, then W40K, and finally SpaceHulk and Warhammer Quest was a bit more than a hobby.  Eventually a muggle life took over though.  Now I’ve realised I’m 58 and have no hobbies, so I wondered whether I could find some joy in it again.

On the Medieval board you’ll find the start of that, a Viking army aimed at the Saga skirmish rules.  However, after getting the main rules and starting in on the army I found the Age of Viking rules aren’t available at the moment, but found people talk about Age of Magic being flexible.  A little more digging and thinking, and lo the Vikings become a Horde army for AoM!

I only paint at the weekends, so in the evenings I have been playing around with the concepts in AoM and looking at the great variety of miniatures available, and eventually the madness set in … an army for each faction!

So far I have in mind that my bold adventuring Vikings (Horde) will find themselves fighting for their lives when they become washed up on the shores of Narnia (Wild), beset by the minions of an evil Necromancer (Undead), and unlucky enough to stumble into the Land while Lord Foul is at war with the Lords (Underneath). At this point I would welcome any fun ideas for Otherworld and Kingdom.

I warn you, I can’t paint to the level some of you guys do, and I will ‘colour outside the lines’ of the rules to fit my army ideas a little, but I will be building up to some hopefully interesting armies.  If you choose to join me on this journey, I will aim to entertain while I indulge myself in my own personal odyssey.

Welcome back.  Recidivism is always welcome in this hobby. lol  I would not worry about if your painting standards are up there or not as it is always fun to get an army out and roll the dice.

So, from my Medieval thread, here is the basic army of Baldr the Unfortunate: 4 units of 4 Hearthguards, 2 of 8 Warriors, and 2 of 12 Levy.  Plus Gothi, the Pagan Priest.

Then as a Horde army I have added:

Stigandr, the Wanderer (Sorcerer)
The Champion Roald (Lieutenant)
Two giant wolves, the spawn of Fenris (Quadruped Creatures)
Magnhild’s Berserker Shieldmaidens (Legendary Unit)
Eindride the Frost Giant (Titan Monster) not yet finished

A great start on both armies - looking forward to seeing them finished and in action on the tabletop.

They look great! Lots of room to add in more fantasy bits as you find them, too. A jotun, maybe, or sea serpent would fit the Norse vibe. Some trolls in the style described in norse myths would also be cool (no idea where you would find those, though, as nearly all the trolls are either GW or LotR style… maybe something marketed as a ogre). I’m interested to hear how your force does in games!

Nice thinking there  :). It’s funny how it sucks you in, I thought I was done with Vikings, but then I found a lovely Jormungandr figure on Etsy and thought that would make a great Behemoth class Monster and you are right some trolls would be great for Bipedal Creatures dammit!

Very nice models.   Now you just need some drugar to "flesh" them out.

Hahahaha, I see what you did there.  I did consider Draugr for the undead army (third on the list) but went more classical, you'll probably see them in the new year.  The Vikings took me six weeks, so I reckon I'll have the Narnian army ready to run into poor hapless Baldr and his men by Christmas.

The vikings are lovely, and you have some fun themes planned. Looking forward to see what you come up with.

Finally Baldr has managed to coax Eindride, the giant, down from his northern home and his story can begin, but I fear he will soon earn the name “the Unfortunate”.

As the third son of an impoverished lord, he is expected to go a viking and return with much riches.  Sadly he has no idea that the fickle gods have picked him as their next plaything, and a throw of the runes has already decided his fate.  As he and his men think they are preparing themselves, they have no idea who’s shore the gods will be sending them to.
