A bunch of 'looks better from 5' away' tyranids.  I don't  play tyranids, but an ebay auction netted me a lot of figs with caked on paint.  I was able to salvage them a bit, and look forward to hunting some bugs.

January 2024 output:

I had read for years here about a miraculous varnish that would really leave a dead flat finish on miniature surfaces. That liquid is regretfully not obtainable in Germany and therefore was avoided to order from abroad. Increasing unsatisfactory results with semi-gloss shine of "matt" varnished miniatures made me finally place an order in Italy. Postage was still higher than the value of the bottle, but still lower than from the UK.
This Winsor & Newton matt varnish works wonders. It's really the first matt varnish in 40 years of my painting, that does what it promises when applied with a handheld brush.
It was tested on some lead miniatures first and then applied to these semi soft plastic miniatures for Imperial Assault. I guess, I will bin the other stuff and will only use this from now on.  :-*

How do you apply?  Shake bottle?  Leave to settle and take from lid?

I've read good reports, various application methods.  None have worked, so far, for me  so just curious.

You seem to have yet experienced the same like me.

Usually I stir the liquid, then shake the (closed) bottle upside down before I start.
I  open the bottle and dip the tip of the brush into the varnish. If the picked up drop seems to big, I downsize it on the rim, then thoroughly apply the varnish with a size 1 brush from head to feet in one thin layer and try to avoid pools in recesses.

I worked this way for decades and tried various varnishes, both resin and acrylics. I tried to thin them for better results, but in the end they all provided a more or less semi glossy finish. Winsor & Newton does not - I am totally happy!
I noticed two differences with it: First, it smells slightly like ammonia - no other varnish I used does that. Second, the talcum seems not to sink and settle to the bottom, but remains solved. Stirring the liquid seemed superfluent, but I did anyway and shook after as usual. I still do that after each varnishing round of a handful of miniatures to avoid possible decrease of talcum saturation however.

Thanks.

I'll have another go.  I have a couple of bottles.   ::)
