Build Something Competition 2024: Timelines and rules discussion
« on: February 02, 2024, 07:48:18 PM »
I wanted to have some discussion about timelines and rules before we start up

Proposed Timeline
March 1 - Start
April 30 - Tools down
May 7 - All photos due
May 15-30 - Voting

Rules
We've already talked about 3D printing in the topic thread, but to clarify my thought is this: Any amount of 3D printing is allowed provided you design it yourself

Further, I think we shoudl clarify that purely functional parts - like Terra-former MDF bases or 3D printed Openlock bases are absolutely fine provided they aren't the full kit

Anything else I'm missing?

All sounds :D good to me.
What about bought laser cut mdf window frames?
I assume they are ok as I’ve used em before, just thought I’d ask  ;)

I think they're fine. Window frame or even something like commercially produced cornice, etc on a scratchbuilt building is clearly just using a few parts. Now a whole building kit, that's a different story.

This all sounds quite reasonable to me.

What is the topic this year?  How does one apply to participate?
Thanks in advance.

To participate, all you need to do is register interest when we open that, likely mid-Feb. Our topic this year is Workplace and your interpretation of that can be quite broad.

The same cap on commercial 3d elements as on manufactured parts.  I am not designing my own but usually use 3d printed elements and details in the same way I use cast and commercial parts.

Agree. Last year we had "only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures." This we can rewrite this as "no more than 25% commercial produced parts or 3D print files"

Tools down means brushes too, or one can use the time till All photos due to finish painting if needed?
I'm okay with the proposed rules for 3D printing. And still somewhat undecided what to build :P

I like the idea of having to post one final under construction on the Tools Down and then you have one week to finish painting. You can of course start earlier.

I'm totally rearing to go this time again! I've got a solid concept, (probably) all materials in the house and the leadtime is decent too...

I'm off to do some sketching :D

All being well and with the wind in the right direction I’m going to try and actually enter this one - the theme is so open but I’m struggling to narrow down my ideas  lol
