Natal Native Horse?
« on: November 17, 2009, 03:41:23 PM »
Or that kind of thing. Never gamed the Zulu dust-up in 28mm so I don't really know what's out there. Just need the one. Not actually for Zulu battles or anything. Black fella in European clothes and a floppy hat on a horse and with a gun. Figured NNH would be the thing to look for to fit that bill. Foundry, but anybody else? (Don't really want to pay all that postage for just one figure that will probably be too small anyway)

Any clues?

I think Newline Design may have some in their 28mm range but it was sold off to some one (sure they are on this forum)

Redoubt Miniatures (you either love them or hate them..) have NNH on foot and mounted.
They have them either with boots on or bare foot to represent the men of the Edendale contingent or Sikali Horse.
The benefit of buying Redoubt figures is they are sold individually too :)

Would you be comfortable using Wild West figures like this Artizan Pony Express miniatures:

I know he doesn't exactly look like a black fellow but, you know, a little paint and so on...

Thanks, guys. Blast it! Redoubt don't have photos on the website. What is this, the 1990s? Interesting that the old Newline website has NNH listed but the new Rapier one does not. Confusing too that the old site is still up there, with no announcement regarding the change of ownership. One would think that taking the website down or at least putting something on it about the change would be a good idea.

I suppose I could use a Wild West figure if it came to that, but I'd rather not.

Plynkes - I could take a photo of one of the Redoubt figures for you?

Your wish is my command.  :)

As luck would have it I have a day off tomorrow so shall attend to it for you. Mind you, Mrs M also has the day off and desires to go shopping!

Watch this space later on in the day for a picture.

Foundry make a specific figure of the NNMC or NNH.

They only make mounted figures though + you'll need to convert some officers from the NMP pack from pith helmet to broad brimmed hats (or use suitable ACW figures)

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/DA/22/index.asp

They are however an older range so slightly smaller than modern day giants.

Cheers

As promised, Redoubt NNH. There are two different versions of the mounted figure, the other carries an Assegai and is not wearing shoes or boots and his carbine is slung on his back.

Thanks, Mark, but as stated in my original post Foundry is a last resort. Buying a three-pack for just one figure at about £12 and getting gouged on the postage are not really in the plan currently. Dismounted versions aren't an issue. This figure's destiny is to be the general of an army altogether unrelated to the Zulu War. Just need one chap on a horse, that's all. And the size thing could be an issue, as he has to mix it with newer figures such as Foundry DA and Brigade. That's more of a minor thing though, I'm pretty relaxed about size differences (indeed some of the figures in his army are from the Perry twins, and aren't exactly huge themselves), it's more what it will cost me to get the single Foundry fella I want: £19.75!!!!

Thanks, Nick. Champion. You're a star. He'd do. Something about him I'm not quite loving but he's the nearest we've come yet. Definitely a contender.

Why not try Perry plastic ACW cavalry? And the Perry's also sell separate heads for black people for their plastics.

Let's just say for now that I have received a very generous offer (as in totally free stuff!) from a figure manufacturer who reads these boards, and after a little conversion work should have the chap I need to lead my little lead people in their freedom struggle. I'll keep you posted.
