Natal Native Contingent 28mm

Morning Chaps
My second unit for the Imperial side of my Anglo-Zulu War forces. Black Tree Designs. Enjoyable to paint and quite happy how they came out.

Cheers

Nice painting!

I have the same miniatures (not painted yet :'() and was wondering what kind of headwear they are wearing; it look like helmets?

Hi, they are supposed to be woolley hats - the NNCI wore a combination of native and European clothes - shirts etc and in the photos woolley hats are favoured. Its just that the sculpting is a little indistinct.

I figured it was a woolen beanie edged red. Sort of like in this pic.  I am not too worried about the exact detail. I find that the eye is drawn to the shields more than the head wear.

I figured it was a woolen beanie edged red.

The one in the artwork is a hat worn over the red strip of cloth they were issued as a sign to distinguish them from Zulus.

If you look at this photo, particularly the fellow one in from the left...

...Then I don't think there is a whole lot wrong with the sculpt. Hard to say if that particular example is a woolly hat or some kind of shapeless felt hat. Doesn't really make any difference which it is, though.

I am not too worried. They seem to look OK on the tabletop  :)
I am just glad that the hundreds of Zulus I have to paint don't have too many hats.
