Looking for decent Amazons
« on: 17 March 2024, 04:05:38 PM »
Hi all.

I'm after getting a few Amazons to fill out an OGAM list, not many, maybe just a dozen or so figures max.

I'm currently aware of the following lines, but all have issues that are putting me off taking the plunge:

Foundry/Casting Room - odd poses, a bit fuggly.

Eureka - website pics aren't really selling them, look a bit... soft?

Shadowforge - shonky looking blow up dolls.

Lucid Eye - I've heard they are really tall and have separate hands with soft, cast on spears... they do look nice though...

Can anyone recommend any other ranges, or put my mind at rest about those above?

Thanks
JB

I had the shadowforge at one stage, a little over the top but passable with a large hoplon.

What sort of criteria do you have for your Amazons?  Eureka miniatures are quite small and slight compared to more recent figures.

Of course your first stop for female minis these days should be Bad Squiddo.  Annie has a good selection of Amazons https://badsquiddogames.com/shop#!/Ancients-&-Amazons/c/21735095

Thanks for the replies, all.

The Crocodile Games ones look good, but it seems you can only buy them in units, and the only UK stockist I can find seems to be permanently out of stock.

@Will Baillie - I'm looking for figures in armour, preferably. Certainly with hoplon, either spear or sword. I'd prefer something quite uniform if possible.
I'm after 6 to 8 hoplites, a Hero type and potentially 4 or 5 archers but they're negotiable.

I had seen the Bad Squiddo  ones, but there's too much variation in equipment for what I'm looking for, nice though they are.

@bluewillow - so the Shadowforge ones are OK if you have something big enough to hide them behind?  lol

Cheers, Bob.  Northstar has these on their website.  I'm not familiar with them, so can't comment on size or casting quality.

Seems to me that if the figures are armoured, at 28mm it shouldn't too hard to pass off any hoplite as female, provided that they don't have a visible beard  ;)

Hi Will, yeah, those are the Lucid Eye ones I mentioned in the OP.
They do look great, but I have some concerns about the fragility of them.

The rbj gaming company has a really nice metal range including archers and cavalry. They look to be having a new website under construction so you can’t view the full range yet.

Brother Vinni also do some if you don’t mind them starkers!

Whoops, missed that  :)

the other idea that came to mind is kitbashing from plastics.  The trick is going to be finding suitable bodies, as there are plenty of hoplons, bows, spears et al. Also, take a look for Scythians as a variant, some ranges include women riders.

Good luck!

The Lucid Eye ones I'd say are the best out there. James Morris did quite a detailed review of them here https://mogsymakes.net/2022/05/01/amazons-and-greek-myth/

RGD have just released a plastic set. They make me do a bit of sick in my mouth but you may feel they could be "rolled in glitter" in some way https://rgdgaming.com/en-gb/products/amazons

Wargames Atlantic do some female hoplites.
But only in digital format, so you’ll need to do the printing.

@TWD  thanks for that, a really useful review. Seeing them pictured next to the Wargames Atlantic skeletons is great as that's who they're likely to be fighting!

The RGD ones are... disappointing. I've got a load of their Satyrs, Fauns and Centaurs lined up for this project and I really like them. The Amazons are a real step backwards.

Thanks to everyone, I think the Lucid Eye ones might be the winners after all, skinny wrists and bendy spears et al.

I asked rdjgc about their Amazons and their reply was "We actually sold so many of those that the molds were wearing out.  I just remastered them today so I can make some new molds.  As soon as I get some castings done, we will add them back to the store.  Ben wants to take some new pictures so It may be a week or so before we get it done."

So if you are not in a rush...

You can get these via Fenris Games https://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/Amazons/c/8945478 which is much cheaper than buying direct if you don't mind a bit of a wait (they're due to place an order at the end of next week).
I've got a few Bronze Age (no Amazons though) and they are very nice; seem to remember some separate hand-and-sword business with at least one of them, IIRC.

Lucid Eye seem to run more or less weekly sales on one or other part of their range. Don't remember the Amazons coming up on sale recently so they might appear at some stage.
