Decent Cold-War (pre-Falklands) SAS figures?
« on: October 21, 2009, 07:18:42 PM »
Hiya, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I´ve just watched the SAS docudrama on ITV4 (yup, nothing special), but coupled that I bought a magazine on the subject last week, I´m considering getting a bunch (dozen or so) SAS types for some cold-war games. Specifically, Middle East in the 1960s and 70s.

I´ve seen the Gripping Beast Falklands Figures (too modern, I assume), the Chiltern models (a bit too chunky for my taste, and probably too modern weapons, too). The HLBS stuff is post-cold war, I assume? I seem to recall some models used in a Miniature Wargames article sometime in the early 2000s, but cannot look it up at the moment (me in UK, mags in Germany, duh!).

So, can anybody recommend SAS-type figures, either in battledress (I assume it is called like that) or in irregular attire (some of the Artizan might do, but would have to be extensively converted, I fear)?

Nothing too pressing, though, but all help is appreciated. If there are none, I´ll probably go for the Falklands setting.

Mongrel do a pack of 8 SAS troopers in a similar style to the Gripping Beast Falklands Conflict ones - same sculptor. Very nice they are too. A pic here:

(not my painting by the way - found on google…)

If you painted them in flat olive drab with some khaki/desert-tan kit rather than the more 'modern' DPM camo, they'd look more early-mid 1970s. I think the DPM become standard issue in the late 70s. The pattern 56 webbing and weapons would be correct for the period IIRC. The M16 was used by the SAS from the mid 60s.

Also, add a greenstuff beard or two - many wore them in Aden in the 70s. SAS regs are very lax on personal appearance.

Check out the Congo africa range from Mongrel too they have European Mercenaries which would be spot on for SAS in the 60s-70s

Hadn´t even noticed those!  :o Thanks a bunch for pointing them out. I´d known about the SAS in the Cold War British range, but never seen pics of them.

I forgot about the Congo mercs too. Mongrel's advertising isn't what it used to be…

Question is, do they look rag-tag enough for the SAS on operation? They'd need roughing up a bit, I think, but a good suggestion none the less.

They have plenty of mixed kit so are quite rag tag

Ebob just did one.

It doesn't say which scale so I assume it is 28mm.

Looks like it is out of stock.

That's a Falklands War British Marine or Para, not SAS.  ;)

Not many SAS types walk around around with a ruddy great Union Flag attached to them! lol
