And I didn't get any painting time in.
School holidays now though so I got stuck in to the manticore from Ditere Helsnitch... snicth.. snicht... Helsnicht.
Quite fun to paint. I went with Vampire skin trio and a heavy wash followed by a bit more highlighting. Same look I'm going for on the ghouls, which are next in line (or possibly the Skull Chucka)
Still need to do the inner of the mouth which I missed. I've also recently put sand in between the toes which I will now say is the reason for him pulling such a face.

And here it is with Dieter finished too. No banner just yet
I have to print out the banner. I've taken a photo of the banners from my old army book and am colouring them on the computer (Arkhan's banner not quite finished yet). If it works well I'll do it for the rest otherwise I'll just print the pages and hand paint them. I might do some weathering on these as I print them as well.
Anyway, I've had Dieter for a good long time. I added some GS to it at first to make the manticore's mane look a bit more real but removed that recently as I started this project as Dieter wouldn't fit very well. I'm going for quite a dull looking palette for these as I don't think bright colours really fit the undead theme very well. So the purple robe is bruised purple from reaper which I think fits nicely. The scorpion tail tip has a bit of green added which matches nicely with the eyes of the staff of flaming death and the chaos runesword. He's one of the most expensive characters (pointswise) for the undead getting close to Nagash himself due to the manticore he is riding. He could be pushed past Nagash as well as he can take 2 more magic items so I'm pretty happy to get the Doom Lord of Middenheim finished.
Also below Dieter are pictures of the ghouls up next. I've now finished the skin undercoat on them with the Vampire Dark paint from Reaper. I think I'm going to do all evil skintones with this triad as it fits so nicely for necromancers, ghouls and vampires. The ghouls I give a brown wash afterwards to make them a bit more grimy.
Also a picture of some movement trays I knocked up at work. the circular one is for my wights. I'm also planning on making some blank bases with old bones from failed conversion experiments when I was a teenager with the undead horde box.

On a roll! Dieter's looking spiffy; the pallette suits the army well 8)

And those are handsome movement trays. I know they're not really fashionable these days, but they're really handy and yours look good already.

Now follow my lead and add the unit's banner/standard/leader's face to the empty space between the borders, so they look like those graphics in old White Dwarf battle reports when viewed from above ;)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Thanks all, The ghouls are coming along nicely too. Probably get onto a skull chucker after them or maybe another wight of an older sort I recently bought.

The ghouls are done. Vampire skin triad with a sepia wash on them gives them a suitably grimy look.
There seem to be 2 distinct sculpting styles some of them look almost like the bloodbowl ghouls of the same era so may have been sculpted at the same time as them I suspect. Those are my favourite of the bunch so I've placed them in the front rank... to die first.
22 ghouls all done fitting inside the basing tray too. I've got some carrion all ready to go next.

That's such a cool project. To me, the Undead of that time are the definitive take on the subject, and I even got a soft spot for the special characters. Amazing that you could find some Skeleton Horde chariots; very cool. :)

So you colouring in Arkhan's banner means you got that one as well? He's probably my favourite special character from that range.

Ghouls look great. Pretty sure I've never seen such a big unit of them all in one place!

Thanks :) Yeah I bought the chariots of Slayer here on LAF, they are quite cool models.
Arkhan is the only special character I owned when I was a teenager, which I then sold in my twenties and now have bought again. I'll be printing the banners out today.
I found 2 different people selling off a large bunch of ghouls so it was like a double christmas. I always liked the snippet of information about Vorag the ghoul king in the old army book so I'm going to get a proper strigoi vampire for that. I've painted up the conversion job I did which looks good but I'd be happier with a proper strigoi as the sculpting fits much better.

Excellent. I just built the new Wargames Atlantic skeleton chariots for a review and can wholeheartedly recommend them, but a little part of me wished that they were all made from bones rather than being just regular chariots. :D

I think they double up as their ancients chariots
