I assume that because they're rather lacking in the brains dept, they haven't considered taking it off/dropping it.  :)

because an actual skeleton is pretty easy to smash apart with a big stick. I like to think that the old armour and cloth is the only thing holding them together.

I just assumed it's because those are the durable bits - everything else rotted away. Not like a necromancer is gonna turn down a free armour upgrade for their minions.

It's just whatever they were wearing when they were killed/turned/buried.

The more vexing question is how they play trumpets.

Except for when they are GW skellies and they have to remove the old armour and give them new armour featuring skullz, batwings and spikes.

I know someone who struggles with that concept  lol

Nah; they were wearing those the first time they were killed. Not their fault their lord was going through a major goth phase when he had their kit ordered, but now they're stuck with it. It's turned into a whole image really, even though they're more partial to sky blue and bunnies themselves...

Most of mine play drums. However, the drumsticks are invariably bones, which seems a bit on the nose

I always assumed it was the warping influence of Necromantic magic that did that bit.

I think I've seen somewhere skeleton figures on war chariots and the wheels of the chariots were made from bones.
...which is weird (and what did the wheels look like when they were alive?)

We should all embrace our inner skeleton for that one. Time for a pipe and whiskey!

You need material for a chariot, you've got bones, sod it - sentient bone chariot.

That's the whole idea behind the age of sigmar bonereapers - they take a bone tax from their territories and then use necromancy to fuse the bones into new constructs.
