Looking for Barbarians!
« on: 03 June 2024, 07:14:38 PM »
Hi,

Help please, I’m looking for 28mm ‘heroic’ barbarians.
Easy you say….
However, I’m only looking for cavalry and chariot models, no infantry.

I want to build a raider style barbarian force, maybe with the odd war hound too?

I still love the old Copplestone barbarian range (now sold by Mirliton)
But, they are metal, and I’m kind of edging towards plastic and 3D prints.

I don’t really just want to buy Viking cavalry and count them as barbarians, I’m after a bit of fantasy flair.
But nothing like the old GW chaos marauder horsemen, urgh!

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Yup, Forlorn Hope took the range over from Em4:

They also have an Ebay store if you prefer that route.

Forlorn Hope, easy to deal with, stock all the Barbarian cavalry.  And Celtos do have chariots.  So you're good to go.   :)

Thanks chaps.
Battlezone seem to be a fair price.

Any suggestions for a plastic route?
Or 3D print?

Wargames Atlantic recently released their chariots as stand-alone kits (three chariots with teams, I believe).  Not sure if it's the "style" you'd want.

However, they're plastic and you can just slap some barbarians on 'em...?

I'd be tempted to go with some more exotic historical types - like Fireforge's Byzantine cataphracts. They're plastic and obviously not barbarians, but they are quite 'metal':

So you could easily kit them out to look like fantasy barbarians - add some severed heads and goat skulls and whatnot!

It's worth perusing the many individual cavalry sprues available from Fireforge (and eBay sellers); a lot of their historical stuff tips a wee bit into fantasy anyway (spiked ball and chains, horned helmets, etc.).

Oathmark's human cavalry are quite barbaric in a successor-kingdoms sort of way. Again, you could amp up the barbarian stuff with some bloody trophies and spiked shields and skulls.

It looks like GW has some new plastic barbarian cavalry out at the end of the week. Don't know if they'd float your boat any more than the old ones did.

They are really nice.
But perhaps a bit too expensive.
