Mansions of Madness
« on: June 23, 2024, 10:13:01 AM »
Morning all, a little departure for me, painting the figures for the Mansions of Madness boardgame for a mate.  The Investigators are done, plenty of source material available, but I have come unstuck on the Hunting Horrors.  Snakes with Bat Wings is the clearest description I have found, but what’s the appropriate colour scheme?  With the Cthulhui and Deep Ones being green/grey I was thinking something else for these, like browns, reds or grey/black?

Red would be a good choice. They would certainly stand out in a crowd of Deep Ones. You could also use blue since I think they are nocturnal.

I like your investigators! One day I will be able to paint faces. My investigators always look like Boozo the Clown.

Thanks! That’s what I was hoping for on the colours.

Sadly the two with grey hair photograph badly as the eyebrows look like big white eyes, but are better in person.  There’s no trick to it, paint the white, dot the black, go back to white and start again until black is as small as you meant and where you wanted it. Then go back to skin tone to tidy up, screw it up and start again, until you can’t be bothered anymore!  Little more rework went into these as they aren’t for me.

Great paint work! How did you paint your ghosts? I really like that grey-tone!

I like the painting you did on the deep ones... just not so keen on the figures themselves. The 2 facing the viewer look a lot like Gremlins.

Thanks!

The Ghosts are Speedpaint Ashen Stone and a little white drybrushing, with gunmetal chains.

Agree on the models, I have certainly seen better models for Deep Ones.  I feel the Cultists are a bit underwhelming too, painting 6 models exactly the same with little detail on the figures was tedious.

Here’s the last of them.

Two Hunting Horrors (I went blues in the end to set them off from the green/greys of the others and the red of the cultists)
Two stands of rioting villagers
The Priest of Dagon and the six Cultists

I read around before I started and I agree that basing them on clear bases so you can see the game board instead of the chunky black things that come with them was definitely the right way to go.

Blue was definitely a good choice for the Horrors. They turned out quite nicely.

The clear bases certainly make sense for game pieces. I don't play the game so the black base is a good starting point. The clear base is something I wouldn't have thought of.

Well the owners of the pieces must have been happy enough as they passed over the six figures from the Beyond the Threshold expansion for me to do too.

Very nice! I really like the multi colored dress on the gal to the left. The giant hand on the gal with the blue dress looks very cool.

Thanks guys.

Hypno, that hand was modelled after the colouring on the previous figs, but I like the one where pink flesh tone is trying to bubble back through
