SAGA rules review on the On Patrol podcast
« on: 01 July 2024, 08:35:24 PM »
Having been long time SAGA players, though never together, my friend and I wanted to see how we thought SAGA held up as a rules set in both Ancients and Dark Ages and if it gave the right period feel in each. My friend, The Fightin Kentuckian, has ancients and I have Dark Ages so we each played a few games and then shared our findings on our podcast. Link to youtube here:

I am a long time Saga player and LOVE it.
Damn it, I'm going to stick my neck out here, and say it's my favourite wargame of all time.
There, I said it. I can't take it back.
But.
I'm not sure I see the value in evaluating it in terms of a historical game, because it's not.
Truth is, it doesn't represent any period 'well'. I think to ask that question of it is asking the wrong question. Like asking if a tomato makes a good football - it can be used as that, but that misses its real purpose.
Saga is a fantasy version of the periods it covers. It bears little resemblance to history. It is not a simulation, it is very firmly in the 'game' camp, which it does extremely well.
And I love it for that.

Very much agreed.

That was our conclusion. The intent in evaluating it that way is for all the Historical wargamers who haven't tried it. The assertion that it is a fantasy version of historical periods or not a true historical wargame is not clear from website or just looking at it for sale. Our goal was to make it clear for anyone who has not played it.

Racm32 - where are you located? There's a very active group of Saga players in Ohio and Indiana. If you're anywhere near us, we'd love to have you join us sometime!

I appreciate the invite. I'm from central KY but stationed in the UK with the USAF for another year. We'll see if I end up near there. I'd loved to me stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB or Soctt AFB.

That would be great! Wright Patterson is right smack in the middle of a lot of Saga players and historical miniatures gamers...!

Thanks for your service! I was Army Reserve...
