Even though I had fully expected myself to have enough of Frostgrave for a while after winning this year's BSC with my
Frostgrave Wizard's Den entry, I very quickly found myself getting ideas for a new warband.
It would be centered around my favourite miniature from the sadly closing down Otherworld miniatures: their 'Fighter in Plate Mail v2'. Now obviously, this will not be my wizard; he's too fighty, so he will instead be a knight in the warband.
The fluff behind the warband is that it's a sort of mini-crusade. Sir Robert deMornay, a pious knight of the realm has been convinced by a traveling priest and his acolyte that there are many lost holy relics to be reclaimed in the thawing remains of Fellstadt. But are they right? Can they even be trusted?
Only time will tell, as sir Robert and his small retinue have been traveling long and far, accompanying Father Bernhard and his stoic acolyte friar Martin to the outskirts of Frostgrave, where they have set up base.
Traveling with sir Robert are his trusty Man at Arms, sergeant Henry Blackwood and his daughter Lily Blackwood, who has proven to be a fast, nimble and sometimes thieving addition to the party. Infantryman Thomas Beaumont is perhaps Sir Robert's most loyal subject and would not be left behind.
Also joining the warband were Sir Robert's game warden William Hargrave and John Fletcher, both accomplished archers. Rounding out the party are Dick Davenport and Harry Godwyn; good alround fighters from the village beneath deMornay castle.
Obviously I had a lot of fun searching through my lead mountain, for just the right miniatures to fill out the warband.
Sir Robert was the starting point of course, and I had been waiting for a long time to break out the couple of sprues of Fireforge Sergeants on Foot I had been hoarding for many years. These sprues became the basis for several members of the warband.
I did however also add bodies and arms from at least three other manufacturers in the mix, including the ubiquitous Frostgrave Soldiers. But I also added heads from the bits box, as well as loads of bags, backpacks and other pieces of gear from both the Frostgrave set and the bits box.
And of course, to tie all those bits (which combined really well most of the time) together, I had to greenstuff almost all of them to some degree. Some I gave hoods, extended armour, and also loads of backpack straps.
The thief miniature I just came across in my bits box and almost immediately the backstory unfolded in my head; she'd be the daughter of one of the members of the warband, who had secretly followed the party. And as she was discovered when they were already too far from home, she accompanied the warband all the way to Fellstadt. Along the way, she has proven to be a rather capable thief.
The wizard (Thaumaturge) took a bit of searching, as I wanted a miniature that looked like a priest, but also like a wizard. And after scouring many, many sources, I came across this Oathmark Northern Kingdom Orphen the Druid that very closely matched what I had envisaged.
I removed all the overtly druididy bits, such the antlers on top of his staff and some extra cloth flapping around. And then I found that he was almost a head taller than the rest of the warband!
So I sanded him down on the bottom; his robes would easily disguise that he had been shortened by several millimeters, and this worked out really well! Of course he then required some green stuff repairs to his cape, and I resculpted his right foot, which had been completely reduced to toxic dust (wear a mask, folks!).
His staff was then topped by a scratchbuilt polystyrene cross, where previously an array of antlers was located.
Finally, the apprentice; friar Martin. I found a great mini for this role, but it was a Reaper one. And Reaper minis are generally on the bigger side, so I had to give him the same surgery I had previously performed on the wizard. Luckily I got the Siocast version, and not the metal one
He's still a chunky boi, but at least his height is now in line with the rest of the crew.
And with that (and some basing), this warband is ready for undercoating.
Which will be the last thing I will be able to do on them, as I will leaving for a couple of weeks of vacation with the family in a few days. But they will be primed and ready for me to start on them when I return
