To politely disagree with Jon above, there is something to be said for playing longways. It is a nice way of modelling how the Japanese, as a general rule, got pretty good at setting up mutually supporting positions that restricted possible lines of attack. As I was thinking of the scenario, in the wider picture there is another well-set-up complex of bunkers either side of the complex on the table - go too far either side and the British walk into another trap.

6ft wide still has the edge of the world.  If the game play is simply - pound head on at fixed defensive positions with no possibility for manouevre it doesn't make an interesting game.  If you are also looking at restricting the Japanese somewhat because it is too one sided then why not consider an alternative approach rather than limit them to less troops?  Just because there is a slight increase in ability to flank a position doesn't mean it is easily achieved - it could lead to a more interesting game with a wider decision tree for both players.

Thanks, I think both of you make some very useful points. I have toyed with the idea of playing across the table, I think there is some merit to that. The British used a lot of air and artillery support to close with the Japanese and perhaps rather than factoring that into the game we could abstract it to some degree by just bringing the two forces closer to contact from the start.

We also need to consider the Japanese option to load up their forces for this game alone. It is the main position but they should be rewarded for delaying and inflicting casualties in the lead up to this table, so that needs fine tuning. Let’s see how the replay goes and then we can try to get a handle on this scenario and how it works in the context of the campaign.

I really appreciate you following along and giving suggestions (and disagreeing), it’s extremely productive for Dave and I as it can feed lots of ideas into our thoughts.

The British make a second attempt to clear the Japanese bunkers from the hill in our final game. After something of a debacle in the previous game it's time to see if any lessons have been learned and whether they can be applied successfully! Well done, both with taking the hill and providing the AAR...
