Otherworld Miniatures similar figure lines?
« on: August 01, 2024, 01:13:48 AM »
Looking for recommendations for figures that will fit with Otherworld both in size and stylistically.

I'm picky about size. "That's a shorter guy" doesn't work for me when the proportions are clearly off different.

Plastic would be fine as long as it matches.

To give some idea of my subjective and hazy idea of what is good, a few meandering thoughts:

Oldhammer fantastic miniatures but not for this project

Midlam, yes, not sure about size.

Frostgrave, maybe soldiers and cultist kits for pieces, barbarians are nice but not for this project, not really thrilled with the line overall.

Oathmark, no

Fireforge, no

Grenadier style wise yes, quality wise no, maybe a few select here and there

Heritage Dungeon dwellers, fantastic character, crummy miniatures

Reaper Dungeon Dwellers, nice miniatures, lost most of the character, also quite large, maybe a few select here and there or for parts use

Any ideas?

a couple more I just thought of:

Crusader, possibly, perhaps some for parts

Wargames Foundry, possibly, perhaps some for parts

Someone on the Fantasy board pointed out their glorious STL printed High Elves - why not consider STLs?

Apparently, all the old ClassicHammer are “out there”.

I know I’m going to be looking at that option - both because of GW obscene pricing, and because of GW “screw the little customer” made to order obscene marketing. 👍

I hear you, color me disappointed in what is on offer for the Old World. I didn't have very high expectations but was hoping that some of the older models would be reasonably available. I guess it is not to be so.

To answer the question: just not ready to take the printing plunge. I'm already painfully slow at completing things and adding printing would just dilute my output even further.

The question did make me reconsider using Oldhammer models though. I might be able to use some of the monster figures to supplement the characters from Otherworld.

Looked at Dragon Bait Miniatures/Dark Fable Miniatures? Many of their figures were sculpted by people who also worked for Otherworld and a few were originally part of the Otherworld range.

P.S. Crooked Dice Miniatures has a bunch of ex-Otherworld Miniatures and a few other bits & bobs that might work for you.

Upstream Games House has a glorious zombie range sculpted by Kev Adams and partially inspired by Oldhammer townsfolk figures.

What do you want to use them for or what are you trying to match? Otherworld has a pretty big range... Is it all for old skool DnD or for something else? Player characters or monsters...?

I like Conquest miniatures for an old skool vibe

And Ral Partha classic models:

Satyr Art Studio has some gems that match Otherwolrd well:

Lucid Eye makes a nice fantasy range that can be compatible with Otherworld

Weren't Otherworld developed to echo or work with Citadel's AD&D line?

I own a single Otherworld adventurer (a female half-orc); she fits in pretty well size and proportion-wise with Frostgrave/Ghost Archipelago pirates and old Citadel figures (some of which are now produced by Foundry - but watch out for the smaller, older stuff there). Have you looked at the Frostgrave metal character figures? There are loads of those.

Some Otherworld stuff is by Kev Adams, and all of his marvellous creations work well together (Citadel, Ral Partha Europe, etc., etc.).

I don’t think so though the owner, Richard, is a fan and serious collector of that range. They share the same inspiration i.e. old school AD&D’s Monster Manual etc. illustrations.

She’s a David Soderquist sculpt. His work is much finer than some of the other sculptors Otherworld used. Notably so with the work of the likes of Kev Adams & Drew Williams.

I own a bunch of Frostgrave and a huge heap of Otherworld. The ranges, when considered as a whole, are not a good match in size IMO.

@Citizen Sade Yes! Those all look good. Thanks.

@Cubs Yes some of those would work but at Citizen Sade] they are a little finer in detail. I have the same issue with some of the companies that make Mordheim proxies. Great minis but they don't really fit for me. Thanks.

@Hobgoblin. I think the style matches, but older Citadel are closer to true 25mm and quite a bit smaller. The C series is a favorite. I think the monsters would work as scale wouldn't be an issue. [Waves hand] "Everyone knows goblins are that size."

@Timotl I've been following some OSR discusses so I have a hankering for using older versions of D&D to run some old school dungeon crawls as solo skirmish. Maybe through in some Five Leagues type rules too. To provide more flavor my preference is low fantasy that leans more towards the historically grounded. Thanks for reminding me about Satyr definitely another company that is worth a look.

Bit of a wild card but take a look at the Dunkeldorf range for potential PCs, NPCs etc.

Very nice kit, very WFRP.

Diehard has some that might fit too....

Don't think anyone said Knightmare, did they? Again, may be too reminiscent of Warhammer, but there was a significant amount of crossover in the early days so they could still work:
