Quatrefoil Castle appearance
« on: August 12, 2024, 03:18:41 PM »
What would the top of a quatrefoil castle look like? All the images I can find are only showing me shots from below, or modern roofs for tourists to wander on- I'm scratchbuilding some terrain, so any info would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

When you say 'castle' I take it you mean the main keep rather than the whole campus with bailey and curtain walls, etc.
The central part of the keep would likely be roofed. More than likely a wooden roof. It would probably be peaked so that rain and snow would run off. And running around the circuit of the tower would have been a walkway which would likely be paved with stones, though may have been rendered in concrete.
Something like this:

This is a modern reconstruction, but very similar to what Dice Roller shows and likely similar to what was originally there.

That is Conisbrough  Castle with a Norman era keep.

Similarly, see this one from Caerphilly, another Norman keep

On time, on target, or the next one's free
