FFOL:BB for Old West?
« on: August 14, 2024, 05:27:56 AM »
Obviously, yes, we can use Fistful of Lead: Bigger Battles for Old West.  But I'm curious to hear from those who have given it a try.  So, please speak up if you have.  How did it work out, any adjustments you found necessary, etc.?

Thanks!

Looking through the rules - both the Reloaded and the BB versions - I think the biggest challenge might be in weapon types.

Having a group of 6 figures per card as a for instance, a bit challenging to give all six different weapons - I think I might go with two weapon types max per group.

Another potential challenge might be the figures seeking 'individual' cover.

I think most everything else should work out okay.

Will have to give thought to making this work.

And for those who are going to say, "Just use Reloaded", well, might not work well with players running a couple of dozen figures each - or more.  So, Bigger Battles for the larger numbers with some minor mods to retain the flavor a bit better.

Range wars being my 'game of choice' most of the time.  I prefer one side against another, not the Free-For-All that seems to be the norm too often with multiple players (and I've been very guilty as a player!).

I find BB can be a bit overly lethal in that a volley by a force usually has close to 50% of the firing force’s dice in hits/shock effect on the receiving unit, which results in the unit without initiative being mostly blown away before it can reply in turn.  Better to have lots of smaller units (2-3 figs as a unit is really not that small) than just a few big units.  even BB needs to have at least 6 units no matter the number of figs per side to have much maneuvering going on.  More is even better.

Since you have mixed weapons it might be better to just make the units small as your parcelling them up as separate dice rolls by weapon type defeats the ease of gaming BB large units are supposed to address.

Dice probability calculator gives an almost 100% probability of scoring 15+ on 6 d10 dice.  Of course, that is not a direct correlation but the closest I could approximate to getting to 50% hits for a unit of 6 firing using d10s with hits on a 5 (3 x 5+ = 15+).  So, that is short range.  Long range hitting on d8 (3 x 8+ = 24+) is still in the 91% range.  Again, not a precise measurement but does lean towards the 'lethality' of hits.  So, maybe an adjustment to the "to hit" number is in order.  Especially given how unreliable shooters scoring any hits is generally with fire arms, and especially with pistols.  Hollywood notwithstanding, most people are crappy shots and quintuply so when shooting at someone who is firing back - including people highly trained in handling firearms (various articles read on the matter over the years)!  And, yes, I know some people are marksmen with both pistol and long arms.  Not most folk.

Any math wizzes paying attention feel free to provide more pertinent numbers.
