The only realistic choice to the OP question is simple: BOTH!

Wayne when you want the "clear eyed" hero and Eastwood when you want the "gritty bad man" hero.  Two men, two conflicting visions of 'reality'.

So, both, as many times as you can get them in metal.  Just don't tell Wayne's ghost if you put them in a game together or you'll get haunted for sure.  :o

(Reality - something Westerns mostly fail at but who cares, we want a fun movie, right?)

My old mate always said, The Dook was a Cowboy and Cavalry Occifer, Clint was a gunfighter!

Oh well.  I may as well chime in.

My vote is BOTH.  As mentioned previously, it depends on the type of character.

My favorite Dook line is "Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!"

My favorite Clint western line is "Well, he shoulda armed himself if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend."

I agree with fifteensaway and Capnjim, but if push comes to shove I put the Searchers above any of Clint’s offerings and wouldn’t have had half as much fun as a kid without the inspiration of Ford’s cavalry trilogy.

The Dook...
"Never apologies Mista', it's a sign of weakness."
Clint...
"There's two kinds of people in this world my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig, you dig!"

I'm seriously contemplating adding Robert Duval, and making it three Amigos. Augustus Mcrae and 'Boss' are Cowboy Legends, in my 'umble opinion.

No worries on McRae.  Lonesome Dove (books and film) were superb.
