The mysterious abandoned film set
« on: 11 September 2024, 11:33:53 AM »
So this has just been listed on Trademe, the New Zealand version of eBay:

"This film set has been abandoned out at our work (a self-storage facility) by a New Zealand film company. It needs a new home.

It is well packaged but from what we can tell, it is a model city. There are references on the packaging to American Costume Company, Holiday Inn, back of set buildings, extra buildings, vehicles, tram, and traffic lights. The set is currently housed in a unit with a footprint of 4.5m x 3m.

This unit is being sold on an 'As is, where is' basis with no warranties or guarantees, and we accept no liability as to the condition of the goods in the unit. Staff will not be available to assist with moving."

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/toys-models/models/other/listing/4907768842

One of the boxes is marked "48th Vehicles, 48th Trams" and from eyeballing the buildings they look to be perhaps "28mm" scale.

I just moved away from Wellington (near Upper Hutt) in May  :'(

I'm intrigued about what the film was...

They are offering viewings, any Kiwi Lead Adventuers able to go along and take some pictures?

What a weird listing... very few pictures of the actual model, just lots of boxes piled up....

I guess "buy whatever is in this box, may or may not be knackered" is certainly a novel approach.

From the little you can actually see, the buildings look more like architectural models, but if they are 1/48 that seems way too big...

well the obvious one is King Kong, but the likelihood of Weta not keeping up with payments on a storage unit seems slim...  lol

What can be seen looks either not completed or really low quality for a movie set but, hey, the price is right - free.  Just need to have access to a place to dump what isn't useful.  Seems the business owner is hoping to avoid the disposal cost.  I'd tread lightly but might be a few hidden treasures in the mix.

So many movies start with big dreams and never make it to completion - and someone foots the bill.  And too many that make it to completion aren't worth the time it takes to watch.  It's a hard business.

Could be a model set for adding CGI skins to later.

Ooh... as in: it's not a miniature film set, but it's an actual town...  :D
