Paint Recommendation for WW2 Dutch?
« on: October 12, 2024, 04:35:15 AM »
Inspired by yesterday's visit to the Dutch National Military Museum near Utrecht ( see report in Cold War section of Forum), I've decided to build a Dutch force for Chain of Command using figures from Early War Miniatures pretty comprehensive range.

The infantry uniform color is interesting and quite distinctive. A sorr of blue-gray with almost a hint of green. If anyone has painted a Dutch force I would like to hear what paint pallette you usrd.

Thanks.

It's been a while since I've done any work on them, but for my WW2 Dutch, I've used the following:

Basecoat of Vallejo Color German Uniform 70.920, highlighted up to Vallejo Game Color Wolf Grey 72.047 and washed with Army Painter Military Shader.

You can experiment with the dilution of the shader though, and I would recommend some variation between individuals, since, just like the German Field Grey, the Dutch grey is all over the place, running between almost blue grey to grey to green and everything inbetween.

It is though, in effect, basically a lighter shade of German Fieldgrey.

For the helmets, I've used :

Vallejo Model Color Camouflage Olive Green 70.894 mixed with Vallejo Model Color  Stone Grey 70.884 to about a 50/50 ratio, shading with the former and highlighting with the latter. Most of the helmet crests were dark bronze, but there were individual commanders who ordered their troops to polish them to a bright sheen, and others, who ordered them to be painted in the same shade as the helmets (the smart ones, no doubt ;) ).
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Daeothar, thanks for the advice.  The uniforms I saw in the museum echo your point that "Dutch grey is all over the point".  When I've seen modern colour plates ( eg Osprey the) colour tends to be a more blue/grey hue, but apart from one diorama in the museum with modern replica uniforms that looked like this all the genuine artifacts ( behind glass and in quite low light) looked more green.

I'm off to "The Other Partizan" later this morning so will pick up the paints you recommend.

I have added a painting list which one time was on the May1940 site (could not find it there anymore).
Maybe of any use
