That’s not to say that adding a territory to orc and dwarf lists that allows taking their own mounted troops (and putting together a stat line for them) is a problem. The proposed orc cavalry don’t seem like they would break the game.

I have never played the campaign game. I have used it as a rough framework for a few games and it will again see reworking and reuse as the basis for the narrative campaign I want to run for my friends. So as a result my interest has always just been in the availability of unit types in the game and not so much in the campaign. I bought the other books for the sake of completion more than anything. I really only needed the Undead book. The others were just nice to have.

So everything is painted. I am waiting for the bases to dry before I add some spray varnish and then I can take some photos.

Here are the initial army lists I will be using.

The Undead force has changed a bit. A 10 model unit of Undead cavalry in Oathmark is about 1/3rd the total cost of the army so I cut it down to 5 models and then used the additional points to buy a unit of Ghouls and a third necromancer.

The Elf/Dwarf list is the same except that I added a Dwarf commander to help keep the troops in line and also potentially do a multi-unit charge if the opportunity presents itself.

I will be playing the game with some of my local wargaming buddies and I also want to introduce the idea of them using commanders in a game in case we play a game with the expanding Orc and Goblin force I am creating.

So I finally got the last minis based and varnished. Quite unhappy with a) the photos and b) how the minis turned out. I think I need to re-examine the light box.

There are four characters. A Revenant Warrior champion and another Necromancer. The Elves get a Linebreaker Champion and a Soldier Champion. I really like the elf Linebreaker model so I will probably buy another blister and paint it up 'properly'.

The Undead cavalry are from Max Mini and they were a total PITA to paint. I actually started them months ago and had to put them aside because they are festooned with all sorts of needless detail. The undercarriage of each horse has an armoured breastplate with detailing on it.  >:(

They got a very basic paint job and some washes and were done. I am too old to fuss around with minis like that.

Finally I based to units of 20 Orcs that were painted by the previous owner. Mantic Orc troops will be used as Warriors and the Shield Wolf Mountain Orcs that will be linebreakers due to their sheer size. Not a fan of either set of models but you make do with what you have.

I will probably keep the Mantic Orcs around full-time but once I get some North Star Orc Heavy Infantry the Shield Wolf minis will get put in storage. Not a real fan of them.

My workbench gets some new primed additions to it. Winter is coming and I want to stock up.

So far I have

12 Human Archers
18 Human Soldiers
5 Human mounted Archers
10 Human Cavalry
10 Goblin archers
5 Goblin Wolf Riders with bows
20 Elf Linebreakers
15 Skeleton Soldiers
1 Skeleton Champion
Orc banner bearer
Orc character with axe
Elf Mage
Elf Spear Champion
4 Undead characters
Bobby Jackson Orc champion

The Humans were originally built to use in Sage: Age of Magic. Hence 12 archers. I may use the Orc banner bearer as a General model. The same with the Undead model with the banner. They both have a really amazing pose that makes them look as if they are not just your standard banner bearer. I suspect they are holdovers from when Warhammer had army banner bearer models.

My intention is to use the humans as a mercenary company. They can help fill out a force in larger games.

As well, I have a few models that are waiting to get based.

Two Elven ballistas. These got a quick paint job. I think I might give the ballistas a wash to try to help unify the colours a bit. I tried to make the crews and the weapons look a little less 'grand' than typical High Elf models so they don't stand out quite so much in an Oathmark army.

The Orc spellcaster in the back was painted by the previous owner of the force. I am not sure if it was finished but he tried to do an OSL effect on it. I tried to help it along with a wash on the spell itself and then some quick drybrushing on the OSL. It still looks pretty raw but until I can get a better figure it will do.

I am also assembling a Goblin spellcaster on wolf which may take the place of the Orc spellcaster until such time as I want to have two of them in a force.

Awesome stuff. Those undead horses look unnecessarily fiddly and like most of the painted detail underneath would be missed anyway. I’m still stuck trying to find orcs I like. Your pace is cracking - looking forwards to seeing the forces get into action.

I missed it on the first one I painted :-)

Some WIP photos and updates

I finished the two GW Elf Ballista teams. Painted to match my Elf force and also to make them not look like High Elves.

I did two more Undead characters (bad photos sorry). One will probably be for Age of Fantasy Regiments as the skeletons can get a character uupgrade that increases their quality and the mini with the sword fits the thematic bill. The other model will be a necromancer.

One the painting table are 15 Skeleton Soldiers and a Skeleton Champion. As with the other Max Mini models these are a bit fussy with a lot of additional detail on them. Not sure it is necessary for a rank-and-flank model.

Three more Orc characters. I have far more than I need but it was easier to paint them all at once than individually. The banner bearer will be used as a King/General and the other two will be used as Champions where needed.

And finally three more characters. Two Undead and one Elf. The Elf character is fairly basic. The sculpt also has a bit of an odd face. Not sure if it is a casting error or just an odd sculpt. The Undead banner bearer will also act as a King/General somewhere. The other model is another Revenant Champion.

Some more photos with the models based.

Two Elven ballista teams
Undead King & Necromancer
Orc mounted character, Soldier Champion and King
Undead King, Revenant Champion and Skeleton Soldier Champion
Unit of 15 Skeleton Soldiers

I have also assembled 10 Goblin Soldiers and 10 Goblin Spears as well as 10 Elven Archers and 10 Elven Spears

Currently on the paint table are ten Elven Linebreakers, a mounted Goblin Spellcaster and two Goblin Champions

Another day, another unit painted. :-) Well not that fast but it seems like it sometimes.

I finished up a unit of sword wielding Elven Linebreakers as well as three new Goblin characters - a spellcaster and two unit Champions. The characters are nice models but I don't think they fit in with the plastic goblins. The faces aren't as expressive and they have different equipment. Nice models but they will definitely stand out from the rest of the unit.

I also found the 'missing' goblin slave models so I quickly painted those up and I now have 15 Goblin Slaves and 15 Goblin Slave Slingers. Much happier with those numbers. The Goblin Slaves are utter chaff and you need at least two additional rows of them to make them even mildly effective.

I am going to focus next on some terrain. I have a series of hills I need to paint as well as a set of GW Arcane Ruins that have been sitting on my desk half-finished for ages. And finally, I finished assembling the last unit of ten Elf Soldiers from the Elf Infantry box. I now have 20 each of the spear, Soldier and Archer units. And happily I also have enough standards to break them into units of ten.

Unrelated to Oathmark, I also primed 20 of the AoS Hobgoblins and a few additional Ork heroes. These will all be for Age of Fantasy Regiments though.

Looking great! I haven’t seen the new GW hobgoblins in person but the ones that were recently teased with the new chaos dwarfs looked really nice - I may be tempted. Keep up the good work.

They were the ones that were part of the Dominion boxed set

Typical GW minis. Nice poses and character but too much detail. Also too much of a PITA to put together for a unit that requires so many troops
