Mammoth middle earth. orc wang page 4.
« on: 01 November 2024, 10:14:34 PM »
I've been wanting to play some proper Tolkien style games lately so I picked up a few victrix sprues on eBay and set about kitbashing some lord of the rings inspired forces. I'm leaning more towards the book where possible.

I've decided that rather than pure gondor I would do a host of Dol Amroth for my armies of men. The first few ]figures are built and ready, and the first test mini was painted today. These are made from victrix Norman's and victrix fantasy knight heads. I'm not sure how I feel about clear bases - I may change them soon. Also games workshop white scar paint is awful - why is it so grotty?! The shield design will be redone in a less gritty paint.

Love both the kitbash and the paintjob.

Very nice painting, suitably grim and gritty to my liking. White scar really is one awful paint and my quality of life got considerably better when I switched to white from Vallejo's model color line. :D Though I have a feeling any white from any manufacturer other than GW is better than white scar.

I love it! I feel kitbashing is thr wqy to go for a Tolkien feeling. Most of the minis inspired by the movies and all those 3D prints are simply not my taste.
What I like is that the model looks gritty yet tolkienesque. Nice!

Lovely kitbash - those new knight heads work well.

My friends rant about Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White - haven't got around to using my pot yet.

I think he needs some bronze on him. Tolkien is famously light on descriptions of armor, but one of the few times (to my memory) that he says anything specific it's about Imrahil's brazen vembraces

Looks fantastic. I also enjoy going 'the road less travelled' on projects like this. I shall lurk and watch with interest.

Cheers all, I'm glad he's well received. I'll paint up some companions during my late shift tomorrow evening.  I'm having a hard time finding suitable orcs so I may focus on harad as my main antagonist for the time being.

Wonderful job.  Where did the wings comes from?

The winged heads are from the victrix fantasy knight head sprue. I believe they've been designed to fit the medieval knights, but they can be cut up to fit most torsos.
Honestly if the chaps at victrix made a few more generic fantasy add ones it'd be great - a sprue of orcish heads and weapons would solve my problem!

I’m assuming you’re already well aware of the plastic orcs/ goblins (Oathmark, Wargames Atlantic, etc) that folks are using for Tolkien inspired orcs - just curious what you’re looking for to fit your vision?

I completely agree that an orc “head and bits” sprue by Victrix would probably be an amazing addition!

Very nice, all "cool" colors, I like him.

If you want to make him pop a bit more then perhaps a horizontal line across the bottom of the "skirt" and the wrists, like you see with a lot of Byzantines.

Also, looks like there's a gem on the forehead.  That could be the same color or just gold/bronze.

Great job on him!

Another mini - this is a man at arms / squire of Dol Amroth. The Norman's in gambesons didn't seem very "knightly" to me and I was unsure whether to use them, but adding wings to their helms and treating them as squires seems too.work. I've just been painting these at work in-between students, so they're fast and dirty - I'm just using a white gel pen for highlights on the gambeson.
