Great Escape Diorama
« on: November 19, 2024, 10:40:25 PM »
I’m planning to do a Great Escape diorama using the excellent Blotz WW2 huts.

I want to build a tunnel under the main hut which starts under a stove inside the building.

The problem is that I can’t find a suitable stove! The ones I have seen are either too big or cost “funny money”.

Any suggestions about where I might get an appropriate stove would be very gratefully received.

Scale? Look to model railroad details. For 28mm look at O (1/4"=1') scale.

Google: "O scale" caboose stove — there are a number of options for your perusal.

was it Frontline that did a load of useful wild west furnishings? Pretty sure they had a stove that should fit...

Search "Dolls House Stoves". 1/48 scale would do the job. The shape of stove your looking for is called a Parlour stove.

Sardoo, I will follow your progress with interest. Last month I visited the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Poznan, Poland. Most of the "Great Escapers" who were recaptured and shot are buried there together with the last crew lost by 617 Squadron ( the Dambusters) in WW2. It was beautifully maintained as ever and very moving.

I planned to show a photo of Roger Bushell's gravestone but something went wrong. In the film he is re-named Roger Bartlett ( Big X), the character played by Dickie Attenborough.

Sardoo, indeed it was. I had found out about the "Great Escapers" before I visited, but was intrigued to find a whole Lancaster crew buried side by side in deepest Poland. I checked the crew database on the International Bomber Command Memorial website and found that 617 squadron attacked the German battleship Lutzow which was providing naval gunfire support probably against the Russians. They died 3 weeks before VE Day.

Fascinating! Three weeks before VE Day is truly tragic.
