Greco Punic War
« on: 23 November 2024, 08:36:14 AM »
Hi Guys
Bit of a left field question .
Need some Imput please.
I am currently doing a Early Carthaginian Army for Sicilian War  on Sicily ( Greco Punic War) .400bc aprox
Both sides. I belive at various stages had Sicilian Hill Tribes and or Scicel native Sicilian as allies and enemies .
So in 28mm what figures could you use for such ?
Interested in your thoughts .
Cheers

I’d use unarmoured javelinmen in Attic helmets. Something like this

Or the Apulian javelins from Old Glory (PII-04)

For my army hill tribes I use Thracian tribesmen. These days the Victrix Un Armoured Greek infantry and add some bearded looked and capes

Yeah, any Italian/Greco peltast style model should work for them.

I would imagine they were simply javelins men with small shields and open faced helmets.  If they wore armor it would be of the simple piece of metal breastplate on leather straps variety.  For the type of fighting they most likely engaged in you wanted clear lines of vision, and ease of mobility to scramble around rough terrain.  Then some javelins for distance work and simple daggers for up-close in a pinch or finishing a foe.

Most light infantry models should do the job.

I think the real question is, are you going to give your Early Carthaginians any chariots?  There is some evidence they were in use in the 1st Sicillian War, but got dropped in subsequent Sicillian efforts?

Got 4 x Agema Chariots already painted ready to go .!!
They are a nice model , but hard to put together. :o :o :o
Nearly finished two units of Libyan Infantry , next one unit of Sacred Band  , and then two units of Carthaginian Citizen Levy , and one unit Allied Sicillian Hoplites
For a start . lol lol

I’ve been pondering the same question on those Sicilian dudes!

I’ve also put an early Carthaginian force together.
For the chariots I used,
Newline Cab and driver.
Victrix elephant crew.
And Wargames Atlantic plastic generic horses!
Plus, being lazy, I paid someone to paint them for me.
These are possibly the most expensive 4 horse chariots I’ve owned.
lol.

I hadn’t thought about the Sacred Band.
I was more focused on the North African Levy?

I’m think about those Sacred Band now!

They look Great , The Libyan Infantry are particularly nice ..... :-* :-* so jealous .. :o :o
What did you use for your Citizen Levy ?? , any pics .??
I have two Carthaginian Armies.
For Punic Wars I have a Huge 15mm force , with matching Romans .
However the new Army is for Early Carthaginians 28mm , cause I have EPIC amounts of Hoplites in 28mm to use with Battles in Africa and Sicily .
Cheers

The Agema Metal Sacred band figures are great but set of 6  with 2  repeats of  3 unique sculpts only...
And 3  nice  Sacred Band Command figures.

For Sacred Band,
I was thinking Victrix Hypaspists with Punic heads/helmets?

It keeps the figures proportionate with my Libyan phalanx.

Although I’ve always been a big fan of Crusader Miniatures.
They do a rather nice heavily armoured figure that is also suitable.
