Project Last Days (24/4/25 The Compund, concertina wire!!)
« on: December 22, 2024, 09:56:39 AM »
To give myself a bit of an incentive to get some hobby stuff done, I have recently toyed with the idea to do some zombie gaming. I came upon the Osprey rule set Last Days and bought that and the expansion Last Days: Seasons and I have an interested member at my gaming club.

With that in place, there was no turning back now. I procured some Mantic All Out War Walking Dead minis, some TT Combat MDF scenery and have a couple of 1/43 diecast cars ordered. We plan to start playing in April, when other games I'm involved in are coming to a natural end.

The rules look nice, a few minor typos but still nice books.

Most of the miniatures were already painted, but I wasn't happy with them so stripped them and am in the process of repainting.

TT Combat has been my "go-to" provider of MDF terrain for years. They look very nice, especially with the Heroic 28mm (32mm) scale and when you put some paint on them they shine. IMHO, best bang for your buck.

The most important thing in the hobby is that you're having FUN! Doesn't matter if you win or lose.

First painted miniatures. Andrea and two zombies.

I like the Mantic AOW WD miniatures, they have decent detail and paint up very quickly. I use Armypainter Speedpaint 2.0 almost exclusively and I am not a great painter, but I can finish a hero model in 20 minutes so that gets things done.

I think I'll leave the zombies with light grey/ white base and keep the hero miniatures with the Murder Scene base colour to differentiate between them.

Some Armypainter Glistening Blood effect paint was watered down and flicked at the zombies with a cheap brush, looks ok to me.

I tried to give Andrea a blouse and cardigan paintjob.

The miniatures will all be painted up first and then I'll varnish them all in one go, so that's still to do.

Two more miniatures finished this morning, Rick Grimes and Mr Greene. I only watched the first few episodes and kind of lost interest after that and have never read the comic but that shouldn't be a problem should it  :D.

I will probably end up ordering some bits and bobs from Anvil Industries to "pimp" the minis. Rucksacks, extra weapons (the Dragunov kit for my designated marksperson...)

Thank you Spinal Tap!

I have given myself the timeframe of until April to get the project done, or at least game ready. Lacking a proper facility to spray paint in and the weather doesn't really help, but I have a club member who's kindly offered the use of his shed  :D.

A good start.

How about the buildings?

A good start.

Thank you sir.

I will doodle with the collection when I have time and energy, and when work is not interfering. It will probably be bursts of activity followed by times of inactivity, due to long term health issues. But I have good hopes that April will be an achievable target!

I have decided I will start with the easier smaller kits, like the playground and the bus stops. Possibly before the end of the year.

Great start! Very gory zombies…

The one thing I was ambivalent about with TT combat MDF buildings was not all have individual floors so you can game inside of them. Look forward to seeing more…!

Thank you sir!

To my knowledge, at least the kits I have bought and owned, all those came with detachable roofs so you could game internally.

I have several kits assembled in my Wild West thread: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=144836.0

But happy to show what they look like when I build and paint them.

Had a quick dryfit and assembly of the TT Combat Playground kit. Very easy and straight forward, no instructions needed  :).

Rick Grimes from Mantic Games' The Walking Dead supplied for scale.

Hope to get this painted up before the end of the year.

It's a dangerous route I've taken! I've now also bought County Roads Z rules as they seem to be exactly what i was looking for  lol.

Christmas Eve and the first painted and varnished models for the genre. Mantic games Walking Dead minis. I will most likely buy some extra bits, like weapons, backpacks, tools etc from various manufacturers and "pimp" my figures  :D.

County Road Z is very cool. I ended up not going with it because it is more focused on the “between the games” campaign aspects. With my regular Sunday night gaming group, that would be problematic to hammer out all the details.

Have fun!

I really enjoyed the Five Parsecs From Home rules and am going to play it solo, so I'm very much looking forward to that.

The Last Days that started all this is for the club game. Not sure if we can manage a whole season campaign. We meet once a week but sometimes my work commitments stop me from coming and we all want some variety in gaming, rarely playing the same game twice. But maybe, maybe there's a campaign in store for us.

Thank you CapnJim! I seem to have found some motivation and energy so I have hopes to have this project game ready by April,  fingers crossed.
