Making a Caravansarai
« on: 29 December 2024, 04:25:13 PM »
I know you can buy a modular one for 28mm from Empires at War, but I needed one for 1/72...

I based mine on a smallish one, the Multani Caravansary in Baku https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multani_Caravanserai , although appreciated floor plans from ArchWeb https://www.archweb.com/en/architettures/caravanserai/

So...(More photos in Lead Adventure Forum - CaravanSaray)
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;su=user;cat=1852;u=1750

I needed rooms large enough to fit several figures based on pennies in. It had to be one storey, and allow for diagonal rooms as well as having a gatehouse.

The process - internal walls

Rooms added

The gatehouse

Painted - roof off

Roof on

For scale

(The "sand" was left over from those "find a fossil/gem" kits sold for kids.)

Maybe I should have left the siderooms long for the camels, per this  Garghabazar Caravanserai  floorplan ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garghabazar_Caravanserai) – which wasn’t there when I started work on it! Nevermind, in mine, they sleep in the central area!

Hope you like, or it gives you ideas.

That’s a great build.

I’m interested to hear how it works on a gaming table, with only 1 entrance, and no windows. Feels its going to block a lot of space on the table, and also be a bottleneck at the gatehouse (unless you can climb onto the roof). I’m a bit surprised the design doesn’t offer some guard posts on the roof - but perhaps the design is more around controlling access from thief’s, than attempting to be a castle!

Agree, it could play the part of the bridge that sucks everything in.

I think ambushes/hunting down inside might have to be a thing.

And yes, any assault should include ladders!

Thanks for the kind words.

Yes, once you get inside, feels like it could be a game within a game!

Find a friendly Arab and get some Arabic graffiti to put on the walls? (or use a computer translator, I suppose)
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Hi

Find a friendly Arab and get some Arabic graffiti to put on the walls? (or use a computer translator, I suppose)

Thanks - I could do, although might need to make them temporary, depending where and in what time period it is being used!

I agree there is a lot of plain wall on show.
