All at Sea - Indiamen, Merchantmen, Frigates & Brigs
« on: January 04, 2025, 09:15:38 AM »
To start the New Year off I have just finished building some models for friends interested in indulging themselves in a bit of fun with age-of-sail gaming.

With the inclusion of Indiamen and merchantmen to accompany an assortment of smaller warships I have reviewed the models in question as well as looked at a typical scenario and other materials useful for bringing merchantmen to the wargames table.

Lovely.  :-* :-*

Bowing to your expertise, what would be the best available model to do a Spanish silver galleon around the time of Anson's around the world expedition?
Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual
Só o Flamengo é campeão mundial
E agora seu povo
Pede o mundo de novo

Hi Carlos and thank you.

Well I would certainly make no claims on expertise about Anson’s navy but from what I understand the Centurion of 60-guns displaced about 1,000 tons bm making her a typical later period large frigate, small fourth-rate of about 50-guns.

Samuel Scott’s famous picture (attatched) of Centurion engaging the Nuestra Senora de Covadonga exaggerates the size of the Covadonga but the image would suggest either of the two Warlord merchantmen pictured here would work depending on whether you wanted to use artistic license to represent her and ships like her as Scott has done or use something more likely to have been encountered. Personally I usually use the artists of the period to inspire the look of my models, with some guidance from the museum models in various collections.

The old style lateen rigged mizzen and exaggerated large stern galleries certainly speak to the look of the ships from this period.

Hope that helps

These are superb ship building efforts including the history behind these company ships. I really enjoyed your articulation of the small ship actions that included Indian merchantmen. Well done!
I look forward to your War of 1812 small ship renditions in 2025.
Thank you very much for all your 2024 reports. I have enjoyed every one of them.
All the best to you in 2025.
