3d prints - 28mm or 32mm?
« on: January 06, 2025, 10:19:00 AM »
Need to order some 3D modern miniatures but it is hard to find information on size compared to metal 28mm. Metal miniatures seems to be unknown to the 3D printers...

I would be grateful for any advice on size comparison with Empress/Eureka/TAG with 3d miniatures from
https://turnbaseminiatures.gumroad.com/

They have 28mm and 32mm options but receive no answers from the printer...

One of my favorite 3-D terrain places, Diabolical Terrain, prints the stuff they take to shows in 32mm, they say on their website.

If you are talking about vehicles, then reference the scale.

Empress modern vehicles are 1/50 (the HLBSCo ones are 1/48).

TWD:AOW vehicles appear to be 1/43 scale.

Most WW2 models for 28mm are 1/56.

Beetles

Company B VW 82E (1/56); Tamiya VW 82E (1/48) and a die cast VW Beetle (1/43).

I've been facing a similar dilemna but I think the answer depends on which metals you are trying to match. Empress moderns (Cold War, Ultra Modern) are 32mm in reality, as are Underfire Miniatures (same sculptor). So if you are looking to match with 3D prints those suspect 32mm is the better bet. It's basically what 1/50 scale models are scaled for. I'd put the Gringo 40 Vietnam range in this category as they are significantly larger than the Empress Vietnam range

Empress Vietnam are the more typical 28mm as are Eureka* for the most part. TAG are beefier although  not necessarily taller.

*Kriegspiel Miniatures also manufactured by Eureka are more 25-27mm. The Vietnam range by the same scultor, the late Mike Broadbent, are a little taller but still on average shorter than either the Kosta Heristanidis sculpted Eureka moderns or the Empress Vietnam range. That saidm with appropriate basing adjustments, most can be made to fit with Empress.

Thanks Carlos, you´re spot on. Quite strange that Empress label both the Hicks sculpts and the Ultra Modern range as 28mm. The latter are HUGE! I was more looking for miniatures to match the Hicks/Kosta 28mm size so I put my bet on 3D "28mm" size.

Comparison of Empress

Empress BAOR British and Empress ANZAC.

The more recent Ultramoderns seem to be larger than older ones.

Comparison with (drum roll for Carlos) Crooked Dice's William Killian.

Glad to see the old bugger! I've missed him.  I suppose his job as a miniature Instagram influencer and catalogue model keeps him quite busy. :)
