Curious...WW1 themed alternate history games, etc.
« on: 06 January 2025, 06:52:01 PM »
I was chatting with my buddy and we were trying to figure out how many 'new' WW1 themed games are currently released or about to be.  Seems to be the real 'thing' of the moment.

Wondering if I've missed some.

So there's obviously Trench Crusade, basically a grim-dark 40K wet dream.

Then there's ...actually NOT Turnip28... which is a fun/weird take on WW1 with a more biological twist. (waiting to discover which one this is) - EDIT

Then we have A War Transformed: WW1 on the Doggerland Front, a kind of spooky alternate WW1 contender from Osprey.

We also have The Last War (by Forbidden Psalm/Mork Borg fellas) which is an RPG/skirmishy take on a survival horror game set in the ruins of WW1...

I feel like I've seen another one or two out there - what am I missing?

Ironically, I just started watching “The Rig” on Prime; they’re on an offshore rig in the Doggerland area, and they talk about the great wave that submerged the area. The show is ok, bit spooky, just got a second season.

Made me think about the game, anyway.

@Elbows; Turnip28 is actually a post-apocalyptic Napoleonic setting.

Gotcha, so what is the Turnip28 similar one which involves WW1?  I know I saw someone doing a YouTube video about it, but it wasn't one of the other ones I listed.  Any ideas?

It was similar in that stuff like abandoned tank chassis could come alive and attack models, etc.

I think that might be Swill.  Even T28 has offshoot games now but I haven't really paid attention beyond the original theme.

All Quiet on the Martian Front

Is Sludge WWI or more blackpowder based?  Not sure.

AQOTMF is a game I which I had picked up when it was out. I don’t think it’s around anymore.

I thought there was a second edition that came out, but not really sure.

Regretfully long dead, but 1999 by Cell Entertainment was the original WWW1 miniatures game.

I've been a huge fan of the game ever since I saw a stray mini from it on CMON, and managed to collect the entire released range (I'm still after all the unreleased minis which were produced in very limited quantities just before the company's demise).

It's a small skrimish game, with miniatures that represent characters that can be (slightly) altered statwise before each game, representing genetic modification. Each mini came in a small box, including a full rules booklet; an actual rulebook was never released; the rules came with each and every mini.

There was a small Yahoo group for years, with mostly members of the LAF there who were all enthousiastic collectors of the range. Sadly, it died with the closure of Yahoo Groups.

I have (what I believe to be) the entire published fluff and rules, as well as pictures of every released miniature on a dedicated fan-site I've managed to keep up and running for almost 15 years now. It's janky as heck and looks as if it's 25 years old though, but that's due to my very limited knowledge of HTML and I've never bothered to upgrade the look and feel  :D

Check it out here: www.1999legacy.com

Probably the best one (IMHO), RPG based but superb as a brutal small character driven skirmish.

Over the Wire, by Warrior Miniatures is more VSF than WWW1 but had a very distinct WW1-esque aesthetic along with a few bits of steam/diesel-punk weird tech (steam mines, flame lances, rocket packs):

The range was a reasonable size, but very stylized. Setting fluff was very limited (1 side of A5?) in the 'core' rulebook. (All from memory... and that was probably close to 20 years ago!) No clue on the expansion book.

Scarab miniatures started a 28mm WW1 spin off of the 1/48th WWW2 Project Xuniverse; with some form of Austro-Hungarian reanimated super soldier ('X-Soldat'):

Don't think there was ever any separate fluff or additional releases

I think you're thinking of England Invaded by Over The Wire Games. Warrior Miniatures did the minis. Yes, very stylised in an almost Flintloque style, I recently sold all my minis from that. Alt WW1.
