How to depict Spartan perioikoi?

What do people think about spartan perioikoi, do you think they would look Spartanesque with long hair and beards and red cloaks, or just like regular hoplites from any other city state?

The people of Messenia were part of the perioikoi. They revolted against Sparta on a number of occasions.

There are extant examples of Messenian coinage, depicting notables so you may be able to pick up some clues from that.

Be mindful that most of the coins are out of your period of interest but all are dated.

I suspect that they would probably ascribed to the dress of the dominant power and it would appear that the perioikoi may have served within Spartan units.

I have mine depicted very much like other city-state hoplites. Having said that, my Peloponnesian army is for the earlier 5th century BC around the years leading up to an including the Persian Wars - so there's not a lot of difference between my Perioikoi and Spartiates anyway. I don't have many cloaks but would incline away from red - leaving them for the Startans proper.

If your army is from the Peloponnesian War (lambda shields for the Spartans?) I'm thinking Perioikoi would not have the city state insignia but who knows really?

Mine, in my army of Agesilaus, are depicted as hoplites of city states. Primarily because I couldn't find anything specific about them.
