Spartan women
« on: August 08, 2016, 06:59:50 PM »
I'm planning a scenario where Spartan women will support their warriors by:-

chucking stones
carrying away the wounded
bringing up weapons etc.

Can anyone suggest some suitable minis?  They can be undressed as I can add some greenstuff clothing, although Spartans weren't too fussed about being under-dressed.  ;-)   Ideally Greek-looking, but in action poses.

Thanks Simon

I'll throw in two suggestions:

Wargames Foundry Amazons and Eureka Miniatures amazons.  Both have a variety of poses, with a generally Hellenistic style.

Hello Simon,

You may just find exactly what you need right here: http://bronzeagemin.com/history/

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks chaps- but what I really need are unarmoured and mostly unarmed women.  Sort of like these, but more Greek.

It's a hard find; if I could get active but naked women I could try conversions...

Yes, they're both the same figure, just painted with different skin tones from Foundry. Her number is 32AMZ6. The Greeks seem to match well with my 28mm figures. The Norse women, and vikings for that matter, really are 32mm and a bit large. I have to put one big guy in the midst of normal guys so that they just look like big guys.

But this figure seem to match well.

Did you look at the figures in the links I sent?  Foundry (or rather Casting Room) in particular has a good selection of Greek-looking ladies, in a variety of poses.  Armoured, unarmoured, chitons, nudes, and more.  Eureka amazons are mostly nude.  The peltasts would like meet your needs, and there are character sets as well that offer some more variety.

The Nymphs by Warmonger Miniatures (previously sold by Foundry) would probably also fit the bill.  Some are very clearly fantasy figures, but many are lightly clothed and armed, with spears, bows, or a kind of falx/ax-like weapon.

I'd also second taking a look at the Casting Room Nymph/War Maiden range (also formerly sold by Foundry).  Some you will likely not be interested in, but there are many lightly clothed with slings, spears, or bows, and at least one civilian set.  Casting Room also has a Helen of Troy set, including several handmaids (this one also sold by Foundry).

In Foundry's World of the Greeks range, under Argonauts and Mythical Heroes, there's a set of Narcissus and the Heroines, which is pretty much what it sounds like.

Lastly (on my list), Warlord does a set each of Greek and Roman civilians, with a few women in each.  They also have armed Celt women, who are in dresses with either a spear or a short sword.

Hope that helps!

Have you checked Bad Squiddo Games? They both produce their own and sell females from other manufacturers. There's a plains indian that might work? Though admittedly not in an action pose...

Simon, did you check the roman civilians from foundry?
There are lots of women that might be usefull for conversions.
Also the Black Tree Designs packs of ancient civilians might bring you some usefull figures for conversions.
See the greeks and the egyptians mainly.

Also azteks and mayans from foundry migh do a trick for some kneeling civilians.

Sorry it has taken me a while to come back; life interfered with art.

Will I looked at the Amazons and there were some absolute shocking anatomy that put me off. Revisiting, though, I do see what you mean- the slinger pack, in particular, look very suitable and quite well formed, with conversion potential. Some of the Eureka Amazon leaders/musicians (the ones in the Myth folder) look interesting too.

Funnily enough I have 3-4 dozen of the Foundry nymphs painted as.... nymphs.  Lovely minis.  I did convert one to be a druidess with flaming torch, I'll have a look to see whether some of the others would convert too.

I have a box of Foundry Roman civilians- I'll have a scout through them and see what I can find.

Thanks all for the suggestions- I'll work my way through the others not mentioned here.  With a bit of luck I should now be able to source a dozen or so minis which will add lustre (and sex appeal) to my Spartan defenders!

Eureka do a range of Amazons which could suit you but might need some conversion.

The only fighting women i know are the warlord celt women.
Change some heads with greek ones and you paint the lot in a greek way/fashion.
I think that could fit the bill.

Ortherwise, take plastic GB arabs and convert them into women by adding breast and women heads......

Cheers
