I get it when the paint has been unused for a while.

Especially if its dry clogged to..

I need more patience probably but the a few taps on the desk and waiting  a tiny few more seconds before opening usually allows both the paint and me to be calmer and less explosive.

Usually if I use the LAB mixer thing is ok but if its just me violently mixing them by hand and immediately opening a surge can occur.. probably smaller gas bubbles/better mixed.

I have never had this problem. I always shake the bottle right before use and sometimes the paint doesn't come out. In that case I simply open up again using some metal thread which I have especially for this problem. Regarding Vallejo, BTW: I have said earlier that another Vallejo paint is Arte Deco in bottles of 60ml (also metals). Not hundreds of course like the small bottles - 17cl - but certainly very useful. Black is black, isn't it ? (;-)) Pricewise a lot cheaper for their quantity of paint !

I store mine upside down. They rarely spontaneously erupt for me, although I have witnessed the phenomenon occasionally. Must just be to do with the amount of air that somehow managed to creep into the bottle last time it was uncapped, surely? Plus some other physics type stuff that’s way beyond my interest or knowledge ;)

I have, of course, squeezed way too hard without clearing a gummed-up nozzle, with predictable hideous consequences. Haven’t we all at one time or another? :)

Interestingly, I received a few new Vallejos via mail order just the other day and noticed that they’ve not only changed their branding and labelling, but also the actual physical bottle.
Same capacity, but a slightly different shape and a slightly different nozzle. I think these are cheaper bottles because the plastic feels thinner - the sides of the bottle have some immediate give to them between thumb and forefinger, which wasn’t the case before. Whether they perform any differently in terms of clogging / mixing / erupting, remains to be seen. The colours and consistency of the paint appear to be exactly the same.

I think the new bottles are great! I've got a few of them and for whatever reason the paint in them doesn't seem to need any shaking, it comes out with a gentle squeeze, easy to control. I've often had trouble with the older style bottles, often paints needing MASSIVE ammounts of shaking to get them to mix. Dunno if it's a coincidence, but so far the new bottles get a thumbs up frome me. And apparently they now hold 18ml rather than 17ml.

Quote from the Vallejo website:

Introducing the new Model Color, the range that sets the standard for all figure and model kits painting enthusiasts, now improved to remain your favorite paint!

We are pleased to share with all of you the changes we have made to Model Color, our most iconic and versatile range.

Throughout this process, we have been advised by renowned painters and modelers who have helped us design the colors of the range so that you have the exact tone to paint your figures and models.

The range consists of 220 references, including 192 very opaque colors, 10 metallics, 2 transparent, and 16 auxiliary products, presented in the new 18 ml r-PET (recycled/recyclable) bottle, completely transparent and more sustainable.

We have introduced a new formulation that will surprise you with its amazing brushability, excellent opacity and superb matt finish.

You will notice that the colors dry quickly, forming a homogeneous and self-leveling layer that respects the smallest detail present in your model. In fact, we recommend applying them on a previously primed surface.

And if you’re wondering if the new Model Color it’s the same as before, the answer is NO, it’s not the same, it’s better!

I have a safety pin in my brush tray that I'll poke down the nozzle if I haven't used a paint in a while. Then I'll shake it and squeeze on the palette. I can't recall any explosions.

I like the new Vallejo paints -- the thinner bottle initially felt a bit cheap but like Charlie I think they work better. I also find the paint is more consistent in terms of thickness, sheen and coverage from one colour to the next compared to the old model colour line. I have some older Vallejo paints that I've hardly used because they're too glossy and I always forget to pick up matte medium when I'm at the shop.
